Historical experts are urging the city to landmark a 91-building section of Ridgewood, protecting it from being altered or destroyed in the future.
The city Landmarks Commission held a hearing Dec. 16 to consider designating the area, bounded by Forest Avenue, Woodbine Street, Fairview Avenue and Linden Avenue, as historic. Both the Historic Districts Council and the area’s councilwoman-elect gave statements supporting the proposal.
The area is important because it illustrates the development of one of the most influential and successful model tenement neighborhoods in the city. Known as the Mathews Flats, the buildings were developed by the G.X. Mathews Company and constructed between 1908 and 1911.
The Flats, designed by Louis Allmendinger, were built on wide lots and most provide two apartments on each of the three floors, totalling six apartments per unit.

What's wrong with the Matthews Flats in Woodside? (49th Street between Northern & Broadway) They're chopped liver?
No realtors pushing for them to be designated yet.

Glad to see the preservation community has done a nice job on public education.
So the important people are just the developers and poltiicans when it comes to preservation of a community.
So why should I donate any money to HDC MAS and the like?
That is easy.
To save 2 Columbus Circle and expand the Greenwich Village historic district.
It is important to them, and since you are from Queens, its important to you. Right?

Everyone knows this block will not be landmarked because it has immigrants on it and the landmarked areas are non immigrant (like the preservation events filled with people that do not reflect this city's character)
One of the best streets in Ridgewood. It still has all its London Plane Trees.
(Immigrant landlords are a huge problem in Ridgewood. They killed most the trees in Ridgewood, they dont like to sweep)
Even worse when they are absentee. Werba Real Estate braught many of these Bosnian and Yugo sh*ts over in the 80's. They like to call each other "Gypsys" fight and kill each othey 4AM in the morning.
When I lived there I caught a new neighbor (from Bosnia)drilling holes and funneling muratic acid into his tree.
All but one of the original trees are now gone on that block.

The old greek and itialian men, now the banglas in astoria, are encouraged to do the same thing.
it seems that trees get in the way of parking in your front yard, or tearing down an old building for barracks.
Re: Joe. They (Bosnian s, etc.)don't like to sweep?
You must be kidding.
They (Bosnian s, etc.)Don’t like to sweep?

....not when they are absentee landlords, No sweep, no shoveling snow.
Just show up to collect rent....trees are a nusance.
When and if the city issues tickets they just kill the trees.
The Buk's in Forest Hills and Great Neck are like that also. The Buks however level EVERYTHING as soon as they get title to a property.
Fines are just a nusance tax to get things done
