Return of the Avella
For all the huffing and puffing the "no IDC" people did years back, it certainly didn't stick very long in the 19th Council District in northeast Queens. You had Richard "Baby Bear" Lee get buoyed by the Andrew Yang vote and Austin Shafran with the biggest unions backing him but former State Senator Tony Avella, the council member prior to Dan Halloran, bested them both. Dem voters in this district sought the familiar rather than a newcomer and didn't give much of a shit about progressive conspiracy theories. Avella will meet Vickie Paladino (R) and John-Alexander Sakelos (C) in the general election.

Plenty of buyer's remorse in the now Liu district as John Liu has turned on his state senate district.
Thank God !
HAHA the progressives lost, great, hopefully Tony teams up with Holden and Moya to make life miserable for Brad Panders
Avella availed over Auful.Shaton him too.
Good luck. Found the guy to be a phony but that is just my opinion.
At Queens Civic Congress he is a giant.
For what that is worth...
Us Rural Americans get Avella back !
Good for Avella and the community. He's always stood with the tenant and the homeowner against the developers.
Vote Vickie!
"HAHA the progressives lost, great, hopefully Tony teams up with Holden and Moya to make life miserable for Brad Panders"
I'd rather they band together to make life better for their constituents...
Pretty much shows the state of affairs in NYC. Another phony for office. He did nothing as a City Councilman, a State Rep. and now they welcome him back again. He's luck that no one ran against him! Don't expect much.
Hopefully he ,along with Holden and Moya, will restore balance to the Force (Star Wars Metaphor here) There are so absolute nut jobs from the DSA that are heading to City Hall.
City Council District 19 totally overlaps with the northern parts of State Senate District 11 that Avella previously represented. Even in the 2018 primary where he lost to John Liu, he won those areas. He lost the State Senate primary because the southern parts near the Grand Central went heavily for Liu.
Avella ran a good campaign this year. He even met with some Chinese newspapers and got some press out of it. Many people move away from Flushing because it’s too crowded, they don’t want the development to follow them. I think some people who voted for John Liu during the anti-IDC frenzy now have buyer’s remorse, because John is just awful. He and Ron Kim are just insufferable windbags.
And people who say John is some kind of trailblazer forget about Ethel Chen. She was the better city council candidate in 2001. But lost the primary to him by about 200 votes.
Question: Is Shafran on the ballot via Working Families Party?
