A Queens mom and her three daughters remained in critical condition Thursday after firefighters plucked the unconscious victims from a raging fire inside their third-floor apartment, authorities said.
The FDNY fought through heavy fire conditions to find the women lying on the floor after the 4:15 a.m. blaze erupted, with firefighters pulling the injured quartet to safety before EMS rushed them to Jamaica Hospital, fire officials said.
All four remained in critical but stable condition hours later, and FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said there was no smoke alarm inside their apartment.
The family’s patriarch told the Daily News that he was waiting for word from doctors on the conditions of his wife and the daughters aged 23, 19, and 15.
“It’s not clear yet,” said the distraught dad. “The doctor says we need to wait 24 hours. So bad. I’m shocked.”
Nigro said the cause of the blaze remained under investigation, but emphasized the call reporting the fire came from an adjoining building on 101st Ave. near 102nd St. in Jamaica and no smoke alarm was found at the home.
“That’s a critical piece of information for this fire because these four women were not alerted to the fire,” he explained. “That’s just very sad.”
A building resident, awakened in the early morning darkness by the sound of sirens, said the family were immigrants from Pakistan and the father lived in Connecticut.

Note the presence of cinderblock fire breaks. these help confine a blaze to the afflicted unit as opposed to the common cocklofts in older buildings.
Say what you want about these newer buildings, modern codes and regulations have made human survival chance in these disasters much better.

The laws for New York City illegal conversions have never been enforced. Fire marshals were never allowed to demand entry into illegally converted homes, and have to wait until someone answers the door and gives them permission to enter. What kind of policy enforcement is THIS? The easiest way to demand entry is to research how many single family homes have more than one electric meter on the outside, and how many satellite eyesore dishes are mounted on one blighted property.
Then, a Buildings inspector AND fire marshal show up, buttressed by signed court orders to inspect the property, and issue 'Cease and Desist' stoppage orders and to vacate all illegal conversions, and/or write summonses to the serial offenders that require in-person court appearances, and ordering their tenants to be evicted since they are not legal tenants, anyway. If it happens again, then they forfeit their property or face serious jail time.
It's the ONLY way to halt the considerable damage that has illegally transformed Ozone Park, Richmond Hill and other southeastern neighborhood communities into Third World shanty towns. As usual, all of the feckless politicians who watched it all break out into shabby Third Worldism have retreated into deafening silence.

Look it's easy to figure out what has to be done, but when your community is filled with a bunch of hillbillies living in the past and stuffing pizza in their mouth we get the city we deserve.
