Odds are that a bill to raise the value of rental vouchers for homeless New Yorkers will pass the City Council Thursday afternoon.
The measure would beef up the city’s Family Homelessness & Eviction Prevention Supplement or FHEPS voucher to match the higher rates guaranteed by the federal Section 8 program.
The legislation is championed by City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and has 40 sponsors — six more members than Johnson would need to override a veto by Mayor Bill de Blasio, who raised a red flag on the bill this week. Landlord and tenant groups support it.
In an interview with NY 1’s Errol Louis Monday night, de Blasio acknowledged he had opposed bumping the price of city vouchers in the past because he wants the state to match the raise.
In March, de Blasio sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo asking him to increase state FHEPS vouchers to federal fair-market rates, so he might do the same for the city’s subsidies.
De Blasio said if the city alone lifted limits, landlords might discriminate against apartment seekers bearing state FHEPS vouchers.
State budget proposals had included $2.3 million for such a raise, plus $200 million for a new voucher program sponsored by Sen. Brian Kavanagh, but both were dropped from the final budget this spring.
The mayor, who has never vetoed a bill — largely because the council rarely passes legislation he opposes — told NY 1 he thinks there’s a good chance the state will get on board with the raise.
“Look, I think we can get this all pulled together, get the state to act, the city to act and get everything aligned in a process to help more homeless folks,” the mayor said.

Too bad the majority of the NYC voting population are to ignorant to see the truth, because blaming “systemic racism” on the plight of inner city blacks is so much easier than pinning the blame where it actually exists.
yo, i want my voucher
FU deBlasio, vouchers and section 8
I just had a social worker trying to talk me into taking in the worlds problem people. I said yeah sure, Welfare and Food Stamps, drug & boozed up, never go to work, cause problems and destroy my house. I told her take them to your house or send them back to their home country's and states.
Amtrak is having a special, anywhere in the USA, $20 to $100 problem solved.
I asked why do they always have cash for $20, $60, $80 ribbons of NYS Lottery and scratch tickets? Do always with the dam lottery and these yard pests will have more money instead of stealing.
No Answer, not a peep!
I went on ranting: One big F&cking big piss in the street welfare state with you liberals and democrats, United States Bootdello
--I never used the word "black" she said "How dare you" and called me a racist !

There are some very nice people who have Section 8 vouchers - I wish I was one of them- the above poster sounds like the typical Queens slumlord. One of the reasons he/she may not want to accept Section 8 is because they will do an inspection of the premises- they might your violations, lack of hot water & security
Bravo Gino!
@Gee is a very nice person. He just forgets to take his meds now and again. Slumlord? No, He doesn’t even own a home. Flipping burgers at Mickey D’s is stressful, so give him a break.

It's clear from your unaccountable reply who is urgently in need of meds! Get thee to the Free Clinic, you neo-liberal apolotist!

Yea, to go sec 8 you agree to give the city carte blanch to enter the house any dam time it wants. You cant have or make the wine or grappa in the basement or dam yard!
What usually happens is whenever a sec 8 tenant makes a beef with the landlord they toss shit down the toilet, screw up the plumbing then call the housing authority screaming SLUMLORD, RACIST SLUMLORD, DISCRIMINATING HURTFUL SLUMLORD, HELP, HELP !!
I know because I get the calls from all these greedy morons taking sec 8 for those guaranteed government funds
A flushed ball of paper towel, pigs feet, a rock, rag, bag of plaster or flour will set you back $500 to $2500 just for the snaking labor. You need call another service for the cleanup and you may lose 1-3 months rent money as a fine, and in some cases if the tenant is one a co-pay the also get 3 months free on the co-payment.
A Flushed rock can brick the main line requiring a full service line replacement. Including jack hammering a trench in the basement and tunneling to the street.
Near one dozen different permits.
Got $60,000 to $100,000 to spare? No acid, snaking or pressure bag flushing can remedy such a block.
And its near impossible to you prove what tenant did it once the plug gets pushed down in the tangy, prickly loaded with, rust, dirt and sediment 70+ year old service line (like most Ridgewood and old Queens homes)under the backup pressure.
(this BIG TROUBLE near always shows when its too late)
Lots of homes in Ridgewood and Maspeth have drains in the back yards under porches, if brat unsupervised kids throw rocks down that drain your fucked the worst way possible and will eventually find nasty surprise in the basement.
(usually Thanksgiving or Christmas time when you have lots of guests and cooking)
Some Section 8 vouchers are very nice people ?
In my 35 years as a contractor I have never met one, All have been destructive black or Hispanic slobs with numerous wilding kids, jailbirds or low life's with addictions. Usually gambling, booze or drugs.
NO THANKS, Let other's enjoy fun times with section 8s.
"Gee doesn’t even own a home"
Partly true, I don't own a home I own four because I worked my ass off!
2-In Maspeth
1-In Ridgewwod.
1-On City Island in the heart of it by Black Whale, private beaches and boat slip.
