Annie CottonMorris, who heads the tenants association at the 71-year-old Woodside Houses, lives just a block from the nearest deli but it takes her two hours to buy a newspaper these days.
“That’s how many people stop me now to talk about what’s wrong with their apartments,” she told an outdoor rally of angry Woodside Houses residents Tuesday.
The latest complaint sweeping the city-owned housing complex is a utility outage that has left 12 apartments without gas.
Some tenants have been cooking on hot plates since last November, CottonMorris said.
Six units were fixed last week, said the New York City Housing Authority, which manages the 1,350-unit complex.
Six other apartments are due for repairs starting this weekend, a NYCHA spokesman said.
“While we understand gas service interruptions are inconvenient, we also want to ensure our residents’ safety as we work to restore service as quickly as possible,” the agency said in an emailed statement.
The complex of 20 six-story buildings straddles Broadway between 49th and 51st streets and has had its fair share of problems.
At the height of last month’s snowstorm, the heat and hot water failed throughout the 22-acre complex for several hours.
Some 40 tenants — joined by an equal number of residents of other NYCHA projects, many with similar breakdowns — called the rally to dramatize what they said were other, more longstanding deficiencies.
“I’ve lived here for 30 years,” said Marie Richardson. “When I moved here, it was a paradise. Now, I pay $2,000 a month rent and I have no gas.”
Other tenants complained of water being turned off late at night, mold, broken doors and bathroom fixtures, mounting trash and vermin.
“You can see the mice play tag on the scaffolding,” said one angry tenant.
“This is an ongoing situation,” Tomasina Reyes, another resident, told the rally. “It just doesn’t stop.”

Where is their homeboy Bishop Taylor who shows up there to get 'community support' for development in someone else's backyard but seems to be MIA when it comes to something like this which actually helps one of the community's he is supposed to 'represent.'
Ain't Communism great?
Socialism = Death.

That's it? That's all you got? Copycatting georgetheatheist? I guess George was right when he posted 4 Crap entries back (et al.) in the now closed "Bernie at the Pavillion" :
"Creative thoughts take alternate transportation in order to avoid even being in the same state as you. If you had an original thought it would die of loneliness before the hour was out."
(BTW esteemed Queens Crap readers; George's entry was a brilliant satirical use of the lauded cut and paste internet posting technique. A monumental creative tour de force! A must read for all blog lovers!)
No more public housing - give the units to the tenants and make them owners.

Yep, you should know FASCIST PIG that you are.
Given the entity that runs the place it's a near miracle those people haven't all died from living in that place. I feel sorry for anyone there who doesn't vote for the criminally insane (D) bunch-for the others, this is the "thank you" for your votes and they deserve no sympathy.
It's kinda difficult for me to have empathy for people who pay 30% of their income from rent. They don't pay gas or electric bills either. What is the big deal? Just get a hot plate, toaster oven or crock pot. These tenants are NOT paying Con Edison bills.
NYC Public Housing was never meant to be handed down through the generations . The idea is that people get on their feet financially, purchase a home or move to a better place.
I have been told that when Asians move into any NYCHA building, the black tenants smear feces on their door and keep doing it every day until the Asians leave in disgust. Where is written that NYCHA apartments and housing subsidy vouchers are only for blacks? But that's how it is.
I lived in affordable housing, a rent stablized building with long term maintenance problems that management didn't want to address, so they never did the repairs. None of my neighbors were too concerned about them since they were all getting high. The POC were extremely hostile and would attempt to initiate altercations as I entered and exited the building. In the building was open drug dealing, prostitution, loan sharking and the low lives that supplement their government benefits with those activities.
The local Democrat Club was worse than useless. An elected official was close by and spends her time getting plumb contracts for her family members.
(D)-s care nothing about anyone except their pockets. Is evident isn't it?
The slaveholder party and their minions. Lovely people.
People are forgetting National Grids blackmail campaign is part of the problem.
They will turn your gas off but will not process an application to turn it back on!!
Many resteraunt and new Pizza places found this out when they could not get connections for their ovens.
Once you un-grandfather your connection with upgrades your screwed
National Grid is claiming it does not have enough gas supply unless it gets some pipeline. Meaning no new gas connections.
Its been an on-going problem the governor promised to address over a year ago, and he's nothing but talk in front of TV cameras.
Stop blaming the landlords !!
Its your stupid voters electing stupid politicians that allow payola and mobbed up monopoly's like National Grid. That's the problem.
Landlords are scared to death to upgrade a furnace & supply line only to find out National Grid will not turn the gas back on from the street, they will also lose your paperwork, and give zero co-operation to both you and the authority's.
You cant even bribe Nation Grid like these city employees.
Option 2: Keep your mouth shut and upgrade your furnace illegally capping & keeping the gas line live. (this is impossible with a building taking Sec 8 tenants calling 311 every 10 minutes and inspectors showing up)
Option 3: Go to court to find out the city will not generate any new cases unless its a proven imminent life or death situation. (and good luck with both of that)
The Elmhurst gas tank reserve should have never been removed, its was a needed supply buffer that served an important purpose called GAS RESERVE.

@Gino
Very good points.
National Grid - UK company. So the rotten medieval Queen and her business lapdogs took over the US of A. George Washington is mentioned as a domestic terrorist.
National Grid is an International SCAM, globalist SCUM.
Check for yourself:
https://www.nationalgrid.com/
National Grid a UK company --Yep, and a very bad one that only spends it money on buying up smaller company's wile ramming the USA the most expensive rates in the world for the WORST service.
They don't need that pipeline, Long Island wants it to develop East Rockaway and the south shore and promise LOTS of money.
And now thanks to a handful of assholes this mob is going to hold the whole city hostage until they get what they want or the Governor revokes their permit to operate in New York. Like he promised to do years ago.
When did monopoly, blackmail and a foreign country taking over become legal ?
I would know what to do.
I read the history on the building the heating pipes are rusty and leaking.
What I usually do with an emergency like this.
1: -Tell the neglectful cheap ass landlord who never did proper maintenance to keep his mouth and get out of my face.
2: Drop the boiler thermostat from the mid 200s down to around 140/low 190/high with a differential of 10 to prevent the pressure from going up and blowing all your water out the leaking pipes.
3: Under less temperature & pressure fill the boiler to 3/4
You wont have fast on demand heat of pressurized 240 degree water but your leaks wont be hot geysers.
4: Set up a TV, laptop, coffee pot, .22 or bb gun because you must stay in the cellar with the mice, rats and roaches monitoring such a shit failing system wile its running.
When the limey bastards at National Grid refuse to turn the gas on we must convert to LP gas bottles. Its that or the tenants are going to burn the building down using electric heaters through 80+ year old linen Edison wiring inside the walls.
Its freeze to death, some shelter or pick your evil for some of these folks
-Gee
What kind of crap about the gas company is this guy selling?
Bottom Line NYCHA tenants utilities are included in the rent - they do not pay gas or electric at all
Get a hotplate & a toaster oven - stop crying you don’t deserve any sympathy- there are bigger problems in NYC- where’s the poster boys for blacks as victims racket- Shaun King- talcum x & Reverend Al scammer Sharpton
