Are the city's bioswales actually good for the environment?

Litter strewn. The Sanitation (DSNY) law calls for homeowners to clean their sidewalk areas and 18 inches out into the street. Homeowners throughout NYC do not clean off catchbasins, sidewalks, and curb areas. As you can see, they expect someone to come and clean the rain garden/bioswale, too.
garbage seems to be a problem everyone in the city for such a progressive place. I live near Kissena Park and the amount of litter and dumped trash is crazy. I'm not even a tree hugger and it gets me mad.
Why would the people living there leave that in front of their home ? I don't care what caused it just clean it and show somw respet for you home. Nasty people litter all the time. Spend a few minutes and pick up the trash simple right ? Too many Lazy New York City F-ing pigs turning NYC into a real Shithole.
Great for collecting garbage, don't know what else they are supposed to accomplish. We can now do away with all the corner trash cans in this shithole, third world filthy city. Another great idea by the progressive tree huggers to save the planet.
They keep some storm water out of our combined storm/sanitary sewer system, reducing the amount of raw sewage that overflows into our waterways during heavy rains. That is not a negligible benefit.
We got one here way out in the street. Took three parking spots out with a newly added No Standing sign. The parking on this street is already very tight. Waste of money. Never had issues with flooding before but you keep packing people in here it stresses everything.
Well, the company that manufactures them probably made a big contribution to DeBlasio/Democrats in order to get the contract, and all correct thinking people know that the Democrats are on the right side of history and science.
"""As you can see, they expect someone to come and clean the rain garden/bioswale, too"""
Lazy sons of britches, If I was given a tree and bioswhale in front of my house Id be proud of it and more then willing to do the maintenance. I have a f_cking streetlight with graffiti on it. I see Queens has just as many of lazy dweller slobs as walking slobs. I wonder how many expect the no good NYC government to wipe their ass and backrub too. To you lazy fuckers: Buy a broom and get some exercise, if your bitching about something like this you likely need it. In the good days in Ridgewood the Germans were out 7AM with hoses and brooms scrubbing sidewalks as I walked 2.5 miles to JHS 93. Karl Ehmer and his dog included. Karl had tons of $$ but still did shit himself and at the time was at least 70 year old ! Shit sometimes Karl swept the whole dam street Turn the TV & Facebook off, get off your asses!! --vote right next time also. You get no sympathy from me, Duty's like this are part of being a homeowner.
"Spend a few minutes and pick up the trash simple right" RIGHT ! ------------------------------------------------------------- Remember most new neighbors are 3rd world slobs or feral locust people. They don't respond to English or reason, you need to train them like dogs, cats, ferrets ect. This by sweeping 3 times a day and usually in 2 weeks they get the picture and most will sweep too. Also by keeping your place clean the other guys gets the ticket. Problem is enforcement is having a huge problem keeping litter tickets in white neighborhoods proportional to black and immigrant neighborhoods.
Some poor enforcement guy with 1 year left for retirement doesn't want to be placed in a rubber room or worse being fired for racism for not meeting the mayors quota. Then on the other hand you have the new young enforcement people being sent to white neighborhoods with a lot of racism on their minds. All this shit is due to the mayor demanding more tickets for non blacks. How else can the mayor make the 85% - 15% ratios in Black-Hispanic vs White neighborhoods equal with summonses ??
I sweep three times a week to keep my property clean. The million dollar home across the street never sweeps simply because he cannot see the trash on his sidewalk from his throne. I'm tired of sweeping his 18 inches into the street because I'm sick of the trash and broken bottles thrown from the cars. The used condoms are the worst. Thanks precinct 114 for allowing public sex to pollute my neighborhood. I have to sweep up used condoms and fill 2 55 gallon trash bags a week, all so I'm not issued a citation. So, everyone do your part. Pick up
Of course they are good, that's less water heading to the waste water treatment plants. On rainy days any excess water the plants can't handle is dumped into our waterways.More than a billion gallons is dumped into Flushing Bay each year and it's the same story all over the city.We should conserve water useage especially on rainy days and property owners should clean bioswales of litter or face fines.
I always clean up in front my area, but I get tired of cleaning up after these slobs. It’s one of the reasons I’m looking to leave this hell hole. Homeowners get tickets for not cleaning up the mess left by the slobs and what happens to the slobs? No tickets for them so they keep on doing it everywhere. Ridiculous. I don’t have a dog but I always have to clean dog shit that people leave behind. Now they leave their masks and gloves all over the place too. Can’t wait to get out.
I sweep three times a week ------------------------------------- LOL I have to sweep every day, sometimes twice a day. I sometime use a backpack leaf blower its 10X faster, I'm done before the old bitch in the dirty house calls 311on me for noise.
Not a single politician (not public servant), has ever mentioned litter and bioswales because they are all part of the cradle-to-grave, government grandstanding, defined pension package of endless graft and greed for life! They are 'ALL PAY and NO WORK,' and they spend the greater part of their 'lunch-and-a-manicure' as a stressful day of ignoring constituents like me, with impunity, and the other half of their empty days of failed leadership is spent hiring their 'Friends & Family' on the government payroll.
For more proof, just ask Bill de Blasio about his cronyism and nepotism: The greatest, grade A shithead of them ALL. He should be locked up in an Arctic prison, IN PERPETUITY, because he has murdered New York City for a THIRD TIME (the other two murders were committed by equally shitty shitheads, Giuliani and Bloomberg)!
When you invite everyone from around the world you help the Democratic Party but do squat for your community - the borough is notable for its lack of neighborhood sense for the past generation or two. No one cares. Queens is just a place to land and take off for elsewhere or make money and run.
What is left is 1 household in 10 to clean up. Only Queens Civc cares and outside of their annual lunch with the pols which gives them photos for their newsletters is pretty much ignored for the rest of the year while its officers write densely lettered essays on topics like this which no one reads.
I am always tempted to tell you that the Queens Civic Congress is reading this site and the comments posted. This time, I will acknowledge this fact. I feel as though I am feeding the trolls (as they said on West Wing), but if you have something constructive to add, please do so.

I have a few in my street parking rich neighborhood. Then I see them on the sidewalk , following the format of the older version. Why would you put them in the street? My best guess is to take away parking spaces, which seems to be an agenda here in my great Gotham. They took out several spaces to make bus stops for the Select Bus Service. Better chance of gaining revenue if you car is parked illegally.

Typical anti-immigrant nonsense. People throwing trash like tissue paper, cigarettes, coffee cups etc. are done mostly by well dressed people of all races from I can see. There would be this one young man every morning who would leave his coffee cup on my property while walking to the subway. Some of my neighbors hide their trash cans so people can’t throw dog feces and other garbage like some public trash can. People are too uncivilized these days. They will park their car waiting for their spouse to get off the subway to pick them up and throw cigarettes, tissue paper, coffee drinks onto the sidewalk. I was so mad I had to throw their garbage away but when I saw they had to stop at a red light, I walkmed up to the car, knocked on the window, he rolled down his window and I said here’s your garbage and handed him his coffee cups. The guy got mad and threw it out the window. He cursed at me and I told him to come out of hi# car and say it to my face. Then he sped off. Too bad he didn’t crash his car and kill himself and his idiot friends.

I’ve lived in Queens for decades. A major issue is more people coming into Queens and they do not have a very traditional attitude towards home ownership. Some buy homes and rent out and they don’t make their way to introduce themselves and I had two homes purchased by people living in Manhattan. That was quite awhile ago but the renters would sweep up and probably received a discount on their rent but people just are disrespectful these days. I had a woman come up to me to ask me to vacate my own parking space so she could park on my property. After I told her this is my property she looked upset. I didn’t have time of the energy to curse her out.
There are many houses being rented out and the renters don’t stay for long and their friends think your parking space can be used when they stop by to visit them. I constantly have to chase people off my property. They always have a lame excuse that their sibling or friend lives next door and they’re just stopping by for a minute.
How about a common driveway where a person who does not live here claimed that I was "selfish" for telling her that the driveway was private property and that she could not park here? One of my favorite stories of home ownership in Queens.
Bioswales are a breeding ground for garbage, mosquitoes, weeds and all other undesirable crap that seems to find its place in there. They bring the neighborhood down because they look so unsightly and it was work of our lovely mayor who probably gave his friends a job. Nice going putting them into the neighborhoods.....you made the streets look like slums and yet out taxes go up to support these city dumping grounds. Way to Go Billy Boy and Chirlane.
No one is saying anything about the excessive underground water causing structural and humidity problems to old houses. I'm a Homeowner and sooner after an atrocious bioswale was installed in front of my house, I now have humidity problems with black mold growing in my basement. I suffer from Asthma and I cannot store anything in there because it gets a moldy smell and any metallic objects gets rusty. I cannot even keep tools down in the basement. I bought my home in 2003 in Corona Queens near Junction Blvd Corona Ave and never had this problem until the bioswale was placed there. It has devalue my home and I'm also concerned with some cracks that are starting to appear in the foundation that weren't there before the bioswale. Other homeowners are also noticing the same issues in their homes basements. Old homes basements were not built to withstand this amount of water pressure nor were impermeable to constant moisture. I'm really worried and don't know if anyone will do anything about it. 😢

Bioswales are "Make the Left Feel Good" money pits. If they accumulate trash and the homeowner doesn't clean it, the city can issue a summons.

Hey, they are great for caching garbage and waste your tax dollars, just like City Hall.

Bioswales might very well not be necessary if homeowners hadn't paved over their front yards and curbside grass strips.

Bandaid on a serious wound!
I just read online (google bioswales NYC) that it costs us approx $26,000.00. EACH.
