So it did absolutely nothing for us. Truthfully, I don't even know why they even have the open in queens anymore. That whole area is just trash anymore, its not even nice to look at or drive through. They should build a nicer stadium in long island somewhere. Over there, I think they will benefit more from it but just not next to Belmont racetrack because that area is too congested too. Put it in a place where it's close to the LIRR but not in an overcongested area and not around a trashy neighborhood. Or perhaps put it in a nice area in NJ or somewhere In upstate ny.
Queens is a third world shithole, there is no middle class here anymore, its a few rich Asians and the rest are poor debt slaves. Nothing is done for the benefit of people because there is no middle class here, there used to be one, but almost all of them are gone.
I take a different viewpoint. As someone who also bikes through the park it's nice to see the fountain at the globe actually on and the assortment of colorful flowers. You get the side benefit at looking at all the beautiful and attractive people as they hurry into the tennis center. Just don't take away my swampy pitch and putt golf course.
Doesn't do shit, The US Open brings in there own vendors and everybody else is IATSE production related members (great overtime for them), FOX sports exclusively or needs to be on the mayors list. That stadium and its grounds is what called an "union shop" everybody else is locked out!! As in a big FU !
NOPE IT DID NOT. MANY PEOPLE STAYED AWAY FROM HOTELS IN FLUSHING AND AROUND LAGUARDIA AIRPORT DUE TO THEIR HOMELESS SHELTER STATUS. THE PARK REMAINS DIRTY AND FULL OF GARBAGE. JUST STEP OUT OF THE USTA FACILITIES AND GO AROUND TO THE UNISPHERE, THE SOCCER FIELDS, RESERVOIR AND OVER TO MEADOW LAKE AND YOU WILL SEE THE BIGGEST NEGLECT FOR A PARK THIS SIZE THE CITY HAS EVER SEEN !!
Alas, where there was ONCE a modicum of dignity and inclusionary sportsmanship, sharing and togetherness, there is NOW a raw sewage plant of systemic corruption, graft, monstrous greed, cover-ups, kickbacks and payoffs, not to mention the chronic loop of 'Noise & Sight' pollution that has so completely ravaged-and-tonsured Queens County to ruinous effect - but, a system that now DEVALUES honesty, public trust, ethics, integrity, accountability and transparency itself!
The political-and-physical gridlock is a karmic, man made disaster of epic, humanitarian (and ecological) fail. I've broken more tennis rackets in the last four weeks than Serena and her male escorts COMBINED - and, I'm not even a player, much less a fan!
A normal NYC/Queens story. Dinkins, a man who personally loved tennis, negotiated a shitty deal for the city so he could continue to attend. The city took park land from Queens, blocked Queens residents from using the park during the event, and gave Queens some swampland in return for the Flushing Meadows land. The financial details resulted in the city making little and Queens making next to nothing. USTA planted some flowers. The event serves high income visitors from outside Queens, and the site is isolated from other productive use during 50 weeks of the year. In the future, more parkland will be endangered, more development will be proposed (soccer stadium? further expansion of USTA? more parking for USTA? etc. etc.) Self-interested politicians like Katz will fill the Dinkins role as purveyors of fake benefits to the City.
Serena lost because she got her ass kicked and was clearly obsessing over those post-victory ads she made for Chase Bank. Who was sponsoring the taxpayer money leeching event.
Nothing but nasty white trash this US Open brings in and good riddance. Two of these flat footed playgoer lugs came into the restaurant. First the were unhappy with wine list, and then unhappy we disnt take American Express, then looked at the menu, slammed it down and rudely left with no tip.
Bringing in people like this is mayor dum-dum deBlazio's vision of improving local commerce ?

It appears Serena lost because of racism and sexism, and Roger because of global warm... uh, I mean climate change.

I happy now that the Jets can now fly over there now and my neighborhood will get a small break from the Jet noise and air pollution.
Of course we benefited. I went to a grand slam match which was 15 minutes from my house. Only someone from Queens can say that!

You can see the looks on the faces of the people on the 7 Train going to the event - they all pretty much stick out like a sore thumb.
No one takes the pablum we are fed and no one ventures outside of the path to the event and the space around the event.
They are all John Rockers and they all live in the real world. The garbage we are fed by Officialdom in Queens does not.
>the fountain at the globe actually on
It's been on all year, and last year too. Probably before that, I think it was only off in the Bloomberg years.

WTF? The 7 Train has not looked this good since the last Open, and before the Opens, since the early 60s.
What does City Limits do for Queens?!
