Dopey DOT program is hurting small businesses

A city pilot program to ban curbside deliveries in Queens has small business owners warning that they may have to close their doors because customers unable to find parking have fled.

City Councilmen Francisco Moya (D-Corona) and Mark Gjonaj (D-Pelham Bay) along with the DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg and the NYPD toured the bustling thoroughfare of Roosevelt Avenue last Friday to speak with residents and small business owners affected by the mayor’s Clear Curbs Initiative.

Under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Congestion Action Plan -- a series of steps designed to ease congestion in busy thoroughfares across the five boroughs -- the Clear Curbs Initiative six-month pilot program was implemented in March banning curbside loading along the Roosevelt Avenue corridor in Jackson Heights from Broadway to 180th Street in Corona during peak hours from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The rules allow for expeditious pick-up and drop-off of passengers and delivery trucks to off-street loading docks. NYPD staff were assigned to pilot locations to enforce the new restrictions of keeping curbs clear.

The tour was at the halfway mark of the six-month pilot program, which has crippled businesses, created perilous traffic conditions, and led to steeper ticketing for residents and delivery drivers along Roosevelt Avenue, according to Moya.

Idiots who never had to run a small business develop these rules. Why would you ban both sides of the street when you could just ban the Manhattan bound lane in the morning and the Flushing bound lane in the afternoon?

7-9 AM and 4-6PM is would be smarter, but yeah ban westbound in the morning and eastbound in the afternoon? Nobody wants these commercial plate trucks double parking peak traffic on a narrow street.

Is it such a hardship to not have a delivery for 6 hours on a weekday? If you business is dying because of this it was on life support before the program began. Don't blame these bozos.

On Roosevelt Avenue there is no one parking and shopping. Those cars stay there all day long. How about you do something about all of the double parkers? Wouldn't that combat congestion?

A phony problem and a pointless fix. At leas they can say they tried something when election day rolls around again.

Remember, that's not a bug, that's a feature. The program is working exactly as the mayor intends it.

This city is too overcrowded, let's just face the truth! There are too many cars on the streets. I thought the whole point to living here is to take the public transportation that is available especially around roosevelt ave where there are trains. I dont understand why there are so many damn cars in this city to begin with.

I agree with Anonymous-- too many cars, most not needed in a city like this. Anyway, it doesn't add up-- you have a little shop, there are a few parking spots in front of it. Who's to say that the person who parks there is going right into your shop to buy something? And then what? They leave immediately so your next customer can park there and buy something from you? Reality doesn't work like that. Grown up. Maybe get better merchandise.

Rest in Peace, Ben's Best Delicattessen, and Jay Parker: Both murdered by the most disgraced and intensely incompetent administration since Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall, which by comparison looks like a harmless dress rehearsal.

The crime here is that Ben's was the last bastion of deli Americana in an entirely ethnic neighborhood of unreliable food that is marginally preferable to hunger.

I hope that those filthy, Kew Gardens and Forest Hills political scourges like Karen Koslowitz and 'B-list' Boro Hall monarch, Melinda Katz will have to travel to Israel on their own unearned pay, to get their corned beef and kreploch! They both DEVALUE honesty itself (just like ALL political fungi in Queens County, and beyond)!

Because our city lacks a reliable mass transit system. Why should it take 2 hours to get from one side of Queens to another? A car can get you there in 20 mins.

It's true. Car, motorcycle, scooter. Anything with a motor will get you across Queens in 20-30 minutes.

Small business have become an an acronym.
