DOT tries to fix Austin Street

From Forest Hills Post:

The Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to combat congestion along Austin Street by adding truck loading zones, tweaking parking regulations and adding new crosswalks.

Representatives from the DOT presented the proposed changes before Community Board 6 Wednesday evening and said the plan would combat congestion caused by trucks double parking, pedestrians crossing mid-block and limited parking availability.

The plan targets Austin Street between 69th Road and 72nd Road. (click for DOT plan)

The DOT said that it plans to tackle the double-parking problem by creating nine 60-foot long loading zones that would take up to 27 parking spaces over the course of the day along Austin and adjacent streets.

Good. Double parking on Austin is rampant. Makes very little sense to drive there anyway considering how many transit options there are.

D.O.T. is "Fixing" Austin Street just like they "Fixed" Woodhaven Boulevard.

NYC DOT has been flooded with new 20 something so called Urban Planners from the Left Coast and other areas outside of NYC. They have no clue, no experience , no common sense. Maby are plants for Transportation Alternatives who are pushing their agenda to remove cars from our livelihoods. Keep an eye on DOT. Don't trust them. Fight them.

No,make it 1 way, heading west, and loop around at the Jewish school/center. Quick solution.

Austin can't accommodate the traffic running through it. It's a commercial strip: prioritize the truck deliveries, then the buses (I say this someone who drives nearly everywhere). Smart people know where they can find nearby free street parking; the rest can walk or take the subway. The problem is all the new residents want to say they live within walking distance of Austin (big whoop) but STILL want to take their car out to drive there anyway. Use your damn legs your lazy fucks.

But there's already not enough parking on Austin St, which is one of the reasons for congestion.

Still, Tommy above makes a good point.

SO they take away more parking as the BOD approves more apt buildings and extend bike lanes?! Cities have traffic. If you're willing to sit in it, that's on you. But removing spots is making things worse!

Austin isn't all that. I live within walking distance and use some of the stores there at times but if I lived in another part of town or another neighborhood I wouldn't bother going there- let alone driving there- many for rent signs and way too many banks and the fools that go to that miniature sized Target and use the paid parking garage have really gone mad.

For decades Austin Street has been a cramped corridor. It must be worse now that the city is grossly overpopulated.

I always thought it should have been a one way. I think it would be better if it was going east but there is that service road running parallel to it, making Luis's idea a very good one.

And anonymous nails it with those transportation alternative assholes. They have obviously infiltrated and are influencing DOT policy and planning. It's like they are designing the streets not just for bikes but for infantile idiots riding on motorized skateboards.
