From NY Magazine:
In 2013, you ran on reducing income inequality. Where has it been hardest to make progress? Wages, housing, schools?
What’s been hardest is the way our legal system is structured to favor private property. I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be. I think there’s a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community, that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs. And I would, too. Unfortunately, what stands in the way of that is hundreds of years of history that have elevated property rights and wealth to the point that that’s the reality that calls the tune on a lot of development.
I’ll give you an example. I was down one day on Varick Street, somewhere close to Canal, and there was a big sign out front of a new condo saying, “Units start at $2 million.” And that just drives people stark raving mad in this city, because that kind of development is clearly not for everyday people. It’s almost like it’s being flaunted. Look, if I had my druthers, the city government would determine every single plot of land, how development would proceed. And there would be very stringent requirements around income levels and rents. That’s a world I’d love to see, and I think what we have, in this city at least, are people who would love to have the New Deal back, on one level. They’d love to have a very, very powerful government, including a federal government, involved in directly addressing their day-to-day reality.

As a socialist myself (apologies to all crappers), this would have been heartening to hear but the problem is de Blasio is a false socialist. And his beggary for donor cash and his reliance on quid pro quo and pay to play discredits his supposed ideals for equitable housing.
Also, the reason why they are flaunting it, and this corrupt stupid mayor knows this, is because his acceptance and beggary of the REBNY cabal cash and their p.r. wormtongue parasites illegal access to city hall city planning meetings has enabled, encouraged and established this motherfucking lunatic market and tower pestilence.
In an interview a while back, he claimed one of his fave albums was The Clash's sandanista, an album with global counter-cultural revolutionary and social justice themes, but he's more in line with that band's sell out follow up Combat Rock a lame, watered down version of those ideals.
DeBozo is not a socialist.
He is a full blown radical communist, what he is describing planned housing, no private property, government control of everyday life.
The immigrants of Eastern Europe are too familiar with this type of thinking.
Their dictators enjoyed the controls communism provided over the masses, but they enjoyed the benefits of privilege, elitism for themselves.
It took years of Clinton, Bush, Obama to get to this level of leftist garbage, the controllers don't like the freedom of the masses and obviously hate this country with a passion.
People need to wake up and vote all the lazy traitors out of political offices each and every time.
Only 8 more years. What a relief.
but the problem is de Blasio is a false socialist
Which politician - pick any country you like - would you is a "real" socialist, JQ?
"The ends justify the means." – Niccolò Machiavelli.
New York City will never be like Amsterdam, Portland Oregon or Seattle so stop trying to change it's character Di-BlASSio !!
JQ LLC, there's always room for redemption.
Tell me truthfully please, WHO do you see in the mirror in the morning? Mankind? Or yourself, the Individual? Since you forthrightly state that you are of the collectivist mindset, you most probably see the tribe, the herd, the communion. Me? I see the Individual.
"Socialism is the doctrine that man has no right to exist for his own sake, that his life and his work do not belong to him, but belong to society, that the only justification of his existence is his service to society, and that society may dispose of him in any way it pleases for the sake of whatever it deems to be its own tribal, collective good." - Ayn Rand, For the New Intellectual.
The distinction between the Collective and the Individual is an ancient one and was brilliantly illuminated by the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael in his masterpiece "The School of Athens" (Detail seen HERE.). This was created less than 20 years after the great Individual entrepreneur Cristoforo Colombo discovered for progressive western civilization the unknown realms.
Most people, however, when they look in that mirror, I dare say, do not know who is staring back at them. These are legion - the agnostics - ripe for the collectivist control be it Bolshevism or National Socialism or even religious doctrine.
Fortunately, the United State of America has at its very foundation Aristotelian philosophy, the antithesis of the Platonic collective: the concept of SELF-EVIDENCY found in Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. America is a conglomerate of free individuals and not an amalgam of mutual morons.
People tend to forget that Hitler was a socialist also.
We all know the outcome.
Well done, JQ
Hold on! I take that back. That was G the A's work. He gets the kudos. my bad.
G the A, this the same guy again. I shared your comment on my FB page. It's is that Spot On. Thank you for it.
NYC would last less than 10 years before it collapsed into a steaming pile of horseshit if DeBlasio and his limousine liberal cronies ran the city to the extent he envisions.
Chill out people. People hear "socialist" then we go to Hitler.
There are models that work better collectively and others that don't.
Should the police be funded privately. No. That would not work.
But property does better if privately owned.
The more the wealth creeps to the top few income earners the harder it will be to live for everyone else.
No one succeeds in a bubble.
>Only 8 more years. What a relief.
Don't you mean 4? If it was 8 we might have gotten some more establishment Democrats in the primaries.

Individuality (along with recognizable fine art) is going the same way the Columbus statue is going. Into the garbage, because it hurts the feelings of those who claim to be marginalized yet wield all the political power.
Hypocritical when so much of the city is influenced by REI and REBNY...rampant socialism or capitalism both suck, head anyone tried the radical idea of being moderate and working to preserve grow and protect the middle class?
My friend works for dept of human service.
She says this bastard in his next term is pro promising to find a way to go after all the LEGAL "playroom basements" in private houses and put some kind of stiff "pool table" tax penalty on them.
DO NOT LET THE CENSUS PEOPLE IN YOUR HOUSE WHEN THEY COME OR TELL ANYBODY HOW MANY LIVE UNDER YOUR ROOF !!!
New York City will not survive one more year of this piece of shit let alone 8. I'm gonna sell the house and move to a red county in a state ASAP. I know that EXACTLY what this bastard wants but I have no choice.
Out youth have been brainwashed. 90% of young people under age 20 see nothing wrong with "multiculturalism & socialism, If things are bad now whats gonna happen when they start voting ?
Like most middle working class white people I am outnumbered, now its time to get out.

I would like to see his reply.
Mayor dumbdumb also claims that he's so great that he deserves a parade in his own honor. What a joke!
To have the New Deal "back"? It never left.
Brilliant post by georgetheatheist
DeBlasio is worse then a socialist, he some kind of communist, a crazy progressive communist, A Bolshevist extremist perhaps?
And if this scumbag had the power he would without question confiscate single family homeowner’s property, houses, private property and bank accounts.
--and that would be just a starter appetizer for him.
DeBlasio reminds me of some 60 or so year old white bearded hippy liberal out in East Hampton totally flipping out calling me a "POS" "redneck" "white trash" "Fascist KKK racist with no sense of community, anti community" then spit just missing me. I felt like giving him a shot of flesh management but there would have been too many witnesses. Problem is in New York even if you are not the aggressor your are required top retreat first before using force.
All I said WHEN HE ASKED was: "a vote for Hillary is a vote for the socialism and everything else my ancestors fought (and died) to prevent so I'm voting Trump”
I was later told the guy was a doctor, a pediatrician who works in some kind of clinic that takes care of the Hampton's and Springs illegal population.

So are you a pacifist or think aggressive government force is a good thing?
If you are a pacifist, how do you justify all of the top down government control instituted with the barrel of a government gun pointed at us? And the only ones with guns is the government, how does that work out?
If you feel the government should force us into your impossible utopian dream, exactly how many dissenters can we justify eliminating, well I don't know if eliminating is the right word, KILLING, no, MURDERING - yea that's it!
Is it one, 10, 100, 1000?
Or do we have to go for a good million or so like Ho Chi Minh getting communism to work in north Vietnam. I think he called it reeducation.
How about doubling it for some 2 million like Pol Pot in Cambodia?
Vladimir Lenin doubled that again and killed 4 million in Russia.
Joseph Stalin saw that you really needed to inspire the people so he went more than tenfold and Killed 40 to 60 million for the communist dream.
The Winer of course is Mao Zedong Who knocked off some 45 to 75 million on the way to utopia in China.
Over 100 million died for the dream, so close yet so far.
The founders of this country knew a thing or two and realized that when the people are afraid of the government, it's tyranny, but when the government fears the people you have Liberty!
That's why we have a Second Amendment!
The ultimate check & balance.
While I wait for your answer of exactly how many more need to be killed for the communist dream I'll be cleaning my guns!
""I'll be cleaning my guns""

Yea and I sure hope you didn't register the "good ones" or any ammo.
Should the commie governor declare an emergency the cops and national guard will be given that registration list to come into your home and take them "for your own safety" And if you disagree "for your own and public safety" they will invoke "The Baker Act" arrest and detain you for a 72 hour mental watch and confiscate everything.
Never forget what happened to legal registered firearms owners during Hurricane Katrina
Wow. This is some very educational thread, no sarcasm. One could say it's vibrant.
What country has real and successful socialist policies and programs, I'm going to have to look, oh here it is.
http://blog.peerform.com/top-ten-most-socialist-countries-in-the-world/
Any tyranny happening in Finland or Sweden? but their economies are quite solvent.
But I believe current capitalism, and as you all see from the towers sprouting like silver and glass weeds throughout the boroughs, is out of scale and out of control. Like the fountainhead on steroids. You want to see a great example of a monstrous system that values money and greed over people, just look at the United Arab Emirates and the former communist Russia.
I believe in socialism and what it could do if applied correctly the same reason I still believe in the capitalist system, I don't necessarily defined being a socialist as an identity. It's the concept I support. The problem lies with the individuals who fall into leading them going by history, who wind up taking advantage of the power entrusted in them. A great example is what's currently happening in Valenzuela since Chavez died.
George the Atheist is way more educated and I wholly revere his points and the facts he gives and the quotes he cites, even if I don't agree with them . I enjoy Ayn Rand, she's a compelling writer and always a great interview despite my hatred for Atlas Shrugged which I think is one of the worst books ever behind the Davinci Code and The Raccoon Pizza Party (anyone remember?) Frankly, I am not going to win an argument with him over this and Molan Labe because I dropped out of high school and basically educated myself on the internet for the past 20 years, not on social networking but reading articles and links to them. I actually use it as an encyclopedia. What history I do know is that is got extremely fucked up in this borough and this city in the past 20 years for me and a lot of others. And it has got worse in the past 3 years under this false socialist helicopter neoliberal staining city hall.
But George, when I look at the mirror, I too see myself, the individual. I don't see mankind or the collective but I and you and everyone are a part of it (this almost sounds like "I am the walrus"). I definitely don't want the government supporting me even though I need it (but cannot qualify for the programs because I am single and without kids). I definitely don't want the government monitoring what I do, write or say in the comfort of my home or even on the street and a goddamn police state, which if you really want to fear monger something about, this has actually manifested.
continued...
I am not a pacifist but I am not militant either. Mostly I am not a moron and definitely am not the "enemy". I also respect the right to own guns, handguns and rifles just not military automatic weapons, but that's another story for another thread.
But you got to wonder as our founders wrote the declaration of independence, it did not apply to those they enslaved at the time. (Don't worry, I don't want to take down statues, any of them)
I'm a bit astonished that bringing up my belief in socialist policies, not a system mind you, would bring up this much a response than the topic at hand which is the stupid mayor's slight mention just to pander to progressive votes and Bernie voters (there are a lot out there people). Now I don't want to sound like Mayor Big Slow and tell people to stay on topic and walk out, but if there is to be any real change we got to focus on the problems today instead of old communist fears and statues and quit the divisive bullshit that the establishment hacks want to maintain to hold on to power. And George The Atheist was not engaging in an argument with me or coming back. Christ, he initially offered redemption. I did not even challenge anyone. I was just making a point on what a poseur and a farce this Mayor is.
You know what, I mentioned this before but now it's settled. I am a political agnostic, for I am sick of arguing over political stances and I don't have time to obsess over other people's beliefs. (or is the right term, political nihilist)
Thanks to all who opined. Especially Larry, (sarc) and Anon 2, who I agree with on this thread. Sorry we can't all be as one, ahem, collective on certain philosophies and opinions.
If anyone cares or don't because I express sympathy for moderate socialist policies for housing, check out my blog as I am going to add to the smack down that Sal gave De faustio at the CBS broadcast debate.

*****Chill out people. People hear "socialist" then we go to Hitler.*****
He was a socialist. So was Stalin.
Deal with it.
***** There are models that work better collectively and others that don't.****
All commies think so until they get all models working collectively.
Then they start jailing and killing their opponents and critics.
****Should the police be funded privately. No. That would not work.****
So what do you call fines, asset forfeitures?
I guess public funding?
****But property does better if privately owned.*****
Selective picking of what we like and what we don't.
Typical elitist thinking.
For your information, miss your tax payments on your house and you'll see who owns it.
The socialists already own your house, but what the head socialist was talking about is allocating houses, apartments, resources as they see fit to the public.

JQ, you are not the only one on this Blog who is self educated but instead of dropping out many of us had to de-program ourselves from what we were fed by our professors. Just curious, did you ever download Animal Farm?
If the usual suspects from this blog got together for a barroom session it would make for one interesting evening.
You all know that despite de Faustio's casual mention, the only socialism he practices is for himself, his circle of friends and acquaintances and his donor overlords.
I read animal farm many times, one of my fave albums is Pink Floyd's Animals which is partially inspired by that book.
I also would like to mention that our nation only a decade ago instituted and ratified the biggest socialist act since the new deal with the heinous bank bailouts of 2008 and 2009
"If the usual suspects from this blog got together for a barroom session it would make for one interesting evening."
If it happens, can i request to leave the guns at home?

For you JQ LLC and other autodidacts: the Ayn Rand Institute launched just last week an Atlas Shrugged chapter-per-week/on-line discussion which will analyze the contents and meanings of everything found therein. This will conclude in April 2018. For those of you curious as to the significance of Rand's philosophical masterpiece you can join the study group found on FaceBook:
facebook.com/groups/Atlas Project
Live weekly broadcasts can be found on Facebook.com/AtlasShrugged. Next broadcast will be on Chapter 2 of Part One this Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8:30PM
Consideratum (55 years ago exactly to date):
"There is no difference between communism and socialism, except in the means of achieving the same ultimate end: communism proposes to enslave men by force, socialism—by vote. It is merely the difference between murder and suicide." - Ayn Rand, Sept. 9, 1962, The Los Angeles Times

you may be much smarter than you give yourself credit for
Why do we have to define ourselves and everybody else?
We're just falling into the trap of socialists, commies, and progressives that only want to divide us to weaken us
I am a libertarian with strong conservative leanings
Unfortunately IMHO, the libertarian party has been hijacked by all the stoners & dope smokers who's only goal is legalizing weed so they can escape reality even further & become more useless & a greater burden on society.
JQ LLC, you admitted that you have your opinions and unique ideas, you're not part of the collective, you are an individual with your own thoughts, hopes & dreams
like it or not, whether you realize it, you are, or actually life's experiences have brought you to become a "libertarian"
You look at socialism as a means to limit or fix the corruption in this city's government, when history shows it only reenforces it.
Lenin said the goal of socialism is COMMUNISM.
When you limit government,THE EDUCATED PUBLIC has the power
More government in size & power takes away from the people
As the leviathan of government grows it gets bigger & bigger but also more hungry
needing more & more of our hard earned tax dollars, enslaving all of us
That's why you can't get ahead, look at all the taxes you pay, most you don't even realize
even on your own admitted limited income
Remember, power corrupts & absolute power corrupts absolutely!
As for keeping my powder dry, I never read anything about registering guns in the Second Amendment or the US Constitution
The city is so screwed up, they didn't pass a legitimate law limiting your ammunition, but the paper shufflers had the fire department regulate a limit of 300 rounds of ammo in a dwelling, trust me its not a real fire hazard, no other places have regulations on ammo for safety
300 rounds is not enough for even a quick modest trip to the range,
The governor of Virgin Islands said the national guard can confiscate guns, ammo, and anything else they need
Everybody has to register guns there, imagine that
but I digress

@George the athiest.
I hated the whole John Galt a is a speech, not for it's content but it was so damn long and the ludicrous swashbuckling ending with his compadres. I recognize it's importance in literature, culture and society, I just did not like it as a book at all, not because of it's inherent politics. I did like the Fountainhead though and do agree with libertarian viewpoints ( I was going to vote for Gary Johnson until he said "what is Aleppo?")
@anonymous I am a registered dem, but after this election I am switching to independent.
To all those registered, primary de Faustio, vote Albanese.
@JQ LLC
Das Kapital is even longer and ludicrous from the start to the finish.
All Hail Columbus!
Smash Cultural Marxism!!
Fuck the Fools of the Frankfurt School!!!
When this slime moves out of Park Slope and moves into some low income projects in Brooklyn takes public transportation, has no bodyguards and eats what they eat, then and only then will I believe that he is not a self centered, greedy, phony socialist with a messiah complex
Forget low income projects.
This big sack of shit deBlasio is likely to re-locate to Europe or Cuba, I'm sure he's already begun stashing money someplace.
You all know that despite de Faustio's casual mention, the only socialism he practices is for himself, his circle of friends and acquaintances and his donor overlords.
Hillary, Obama, Schumer, Pelosi and the list goes on and on.
These people despise America and they have no place here.
Let them go and form their own Banana Republic.
He was a Sandinista, what did you expect?
