From PIX11:
Several New Yorkers hoping to move into new apartments were the victims of a scam, police said Monday.
The culprits met with the victims over the last few months and identified themselves as apartment owners, police said. They took deposits from victims and gave them keys for already-occupied apartments.
The scam started on April 1 when a man took a $1,400 deposit from a 40-year-old woman in Jackson Heights. Subsequent ‘deposits’ by other victims were for even more money. A 25-year-old woman gave a man $1,800 for an already-occupied apartment on April 21.

Here's a tip for prospective renters, if your real estate agent shows up dressed like he is going to meet his parole officer, RUN.
PEOPLE DON'T YET UNDERSTAND THE SCOPE OF THIS PROBLEM. IT'S SO WIDESPREAD AND IT DOESN'T GET MUCH MAINSTREAM COVERAGE.
Who would give total strangers on the sidewalk money for a deposit on an apartment. Plus strangers who look like thug hood rats to boot.
IDIOTS, that is who.
I mean how dumb does one have to be. Pretty damn dumb.
Queens residents, always keeping the bar as low as possible.
And he's ruining Deadpool's good name while he's at it.
This is how depressing trying to get an apartment these days is. These scumbags knew the right area to do their scam because of the gentrification creep going on in Jackson Heights and the immigration status of their chosen marks.
Housing has become a cutthroat business the last 4 years under de Faustio. Well, at least he notices the subway now, and the homeless before he gets the cops to shoo them from his sight.
Note to self, if the person dresses like he is 10 yrs old and still has the stickers on his hat don't trust him.
Third world population, third world city, third world scams like this one
the stickers on the hat is the new ghetto style.
