Douglaston residents request park space

From the Queens Tribune:

The grassy lot next to the St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church on 234th Street has been vacant for years. Currently owned by the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), the lot has withstood several proposals from both the city and the church over the years—including plans for a street, nursery and parking lot. But for the past 10 years, local civic associations have opposed each attempt, calling on HPD to transfer the property to the city Parks Department to create a new public green space.

“The community remains solidly in favor of this as a park,” said state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) during a Tuesday press conference adjacent to the property, alongside representatives from several civic associations.

A park? You don't need that. Comrade Diblasio has just what you need, a new homeless shelter!

Let's see who will win this battle, the church has 'appropriated' the space and often uses it as if they already owned it.

There isn't much need for a park, especially given the fact that parks in Northeastern Queens get little to no maintenance now. Do we want a newly run-down, filled with debris 'park' when we have a nice green grassy area now? Why not just turn it over to the parks department with the promise they do nothing?

You are correct the parks here in Northeastern Queens get the short end of the stick.
Has anyone noticed the condition of the Joe Michael's Mile jogging/walking/biking path ?
Potholes galore and unpainted lines meant for safety vanishing from neglect !
