Bronx parking garage collapses
From CBS 2:
Dozens of cars were damaged when a parking garage in the Bronx suddenly collapsed on Sunday morning.
Collapsed concrete crushed cars inside a two-story parking garage, with the wheels of one vehicle clearly visible coming down through the roof of 3000 Jerome Avenue in the Bronx.
Firefighters got the call just after 6 a.m. Sunday when part of the second story loaded with cars came crashing down on vehicles below.
One employee was inside at the time, but wasn’t injured.
The Department of Buildings ordered the structure to be vacated and issued the owner a violation for failing to properly maintain the building.

Another failure of the notoriously inept DOB.
The building should have been padlocked and sealed if it presented extreme danger.
That is what DOB does on extreme conditions, but did not do here.
Public safety is at risk with a wishey washy shady DOB like this.
in the article people are complaining that their Porsches and other expensive SUV's were damaged. looking at google maps it looks like the neighborhood is just above ghetto. WTF?
The DOB doesn't inspect every single structure and sidewalk fence and overhead shed because they can't, there's just too many. It's easy to say "blame the DOB" but the alternative is hiring more inspectors and the costs to check every structure that people get upset over would be like $100 million per year. The bigger problem is finding that many people who are qualified. And even if that did happen, this building would hardly have been a priority, because it's an unoccupied storage structure, and dry reinforced concrete almost never collapses like this because it's designed to self-redistribute loads around the parts that are weak.

I've actually parked in that garage on occasion. It was dirty, but didn't seem that bad. It was usually when going to one of my kids Parent Teacher Conferences. You'll see nice cars in it because folks use it during the day when they work in the area (MTA, colleges, High Schools) and they don't want to leave the car on the street
As bad as that area is (I'm up there all the time), it is WAY WAY better than it was 1977-1980 when I went to school up there, when I could have told you exactly where in the area to buy guns etc

Yes, a full investigation is warranted. People in the Bronx may not own nice cars. Call out the National Guard.
What? They skimped on the concrete? No way!
Now if the Queens borough hall garage had done the same, we might have seen a cleaner borough government.
LOL!
