From Brooklyn Daily:
An Asian advocacy group that criticized a bill to prevent so-called “illegal home conversions” as racist has reversed its position and is the first Asian group to publicly support the measure. In July, Members of the Asian Community United Society said the proposal to boost fines for dicing one- and two-family homes into multifamily apartments unfairly targeted the Chinese who live in such buildings. But now the group’s director says the bill will actually protect Asian immigrants from predatory landlords.
“Initially I was under the impression that Chinese homeowners were being targeted, and we were worried about their safety,” said Warren Chan, the executive director of the society. “We need to come together because these developers are taking advantage of our community.”
The bill, introduced in June, would impose greater fines on landlords who incorrectly subdivide homes and would also let the city put liens on properties when landlords fail to pay the penalties. In its early stages, the bill created a fund for residents displaced when the city vacates illegal buildings, but lawmakers scrapped the provision, because Council does not have the power to designate such a fund.
Chan and others previously argued that the legislation would put immigrant families on the street as the city empties dangerous homes. The city raided two such illegal conversions in Dyker Heights this month, leaving nearly 40 people without a home.
But Chan now says that property owners are the real bad guys, because unsanctioned construction work exposes residents to carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical fires, and building collapse. The city must adopt a two-pronged approach — pass the bill and increase the stock of affordable housing so new immigrants have options — he said.

It is all very simple.
The City of New York needs more money.
And everything is racist...
it is going to be a BEAUTIFUL WALL!
EVERYONE does illegal conversions these days. It's not just an Asian thing. Everyone breaks the laws in this city and the city just keeps looking the other way....it's very sad. Our garbage men are overworked, our schools are bursting at the seams, you already have to take a day off of work just to go to the dmv if you don't have an appointment, more court cases every year, crowded trains and buses, no parking on the streets, traffic backed up for miles and miles. But it's ok, the government just wants to allow more and more illegal conversions and build more housing that we can't support. Just keep on going ahead. This city is a safety hazard as it is already. If we all had just a few hours to evacuate ny and long island, more than 1/2 of us would be dead. But it's fine according to the politicians.
Societal hypocrisy
Crappy, I'm not used to this. Does this mean your work and the work of others is starting to have an impact?!
Hmmmm...maybe the chickens....make that the dragons.....finally came home to roost?
Could upper class Asians be sick of their own lower class (i.e. Taiwanese , Fujianese) countryman ruining the values of their new homes and neighborhoods? One thing for sure, they do not want the homes they bought winding up being in an Asian low class ghetto filled with illegal renters.
EVERYONE, no matter what race , color or creed (as it goes), wants to live in the overcrowded conditions they left in their homeland.
Newly minted Americans. Want what ALL Americans want...A GOOD QUALITY OF LIFE!
Hmmmm....and all that BS about "vibrant, bustling Flushing must be wearing thin. That ballyhoo might have worked well 30 years ago.
What with the overpricing of its real estate, which has occurred, NOBODY wants to live in an overcrowded underserved dump of a ghetto!
Not even the Chinese! Or else, they will watch their investments, homes and businesses get flushed down Flushing's toilet!
All that illegal shit must be affecting their bottom line or else they would not be in favor of this.
Asians are extremely business money minded. The first group that arrived bilked their own.
The newer arrivals do not want to be associated with the illegal get rich quick practices of their barbarian counterparts.
Look at what the Indian community has done to Richmond Hill and Ozone Park. Talk about illegal house conversions... Whew!
when does it take a full day to go to the DMV? LicenseExpress is an hour or two and things like plates or registration are done over the internet

dam straight mofo f-cking su-ka hole.
Yes, we are afraid, because they only care about money money money and aren't here long enough or maybe isolated for too long to not know the USA laws.
But not really about ruining, but more like raising up the dam real estate prices because only using this cookie cutter method will they be able to make money or break even. That is why house sell for over 1 million buck when it's only suppose to be worth only 800k bucks. So stupid. Their own is also calling their own people stupid when it comes to real estate. But then again, those ppl are so flushed with cash that hundreds of thousand dollars are like pocket change to them. So either way they win.
My friend lives in the border of North Flushing and Whitestone in a two story, detached two family home. The house next door is owned and inhabited by Chinese people, the cellar got transformed (I can bet illegally) and there's even an electric meter on the side of the house next to the two others dedicated to that cellar.
These are 3 bedroom, two full bath houses with an open area as dining room. In both floors the dining room got converted into a fourth bedroom.
All this under the supervision of the city.
I'm not sure if all this is allowed or if somebody in the D.O.B. got greased.
Every community has a group that protects It's People
Who is standing up for the racist white working tax payer?
Are you tired of being labeled as racist cause your white,I Am.
Low class Chinese garbage just bought the ONE BEDROOM co-op apartment next to me a couple months ago. They have somewhere between 6-8 adults living there. At night, you can see curtain partitions set up in the ceiling and bunk beds in the dining room. They are not neighbors in any sense of the word. They do not socialize with other residents. They were using the window well as a dump for their stolen recyclable bottles until they redeemed them, drawing hordes of flies. They use the bushes in front of the building as a drying rack for rugs. They just bring their shantytown Chinese ghetto ways right with them. Unfortunately, the co-op is selling, it seems, only to Chinese now and the whole once beautiful development is turning into a Chinese ghetto. I am disgusted not only with their shantytown habits as described above, but with the destruction of our community. These people do not speak English, nor do they wish to learn. They are not neighbors in the truest sense, they are invaders. In the event of an emergency like a fire, you could not communicate with them. Chinese are also now invading Forest Hills, Fresh Meadows, etc. Are there no other people moving to Queens?
They were likely told that with the mood of the Queens electorte, as well as the threat that Donald Trump is making to the Boss Tweeds in the Democratic Party, they had better lay low and not make trouble by fighting this.
Besides, we all know that it will not be enforced.
Are there no other people moving to Queens?
The answer is obviously, no.
Cannot wait for this to start in LIC soon. All the development north of the plaza is already either Verve Women or Asian tech drones living in corporate leased apartments.
Here we go again "increase the supply of affordable hose for the immigrants" . Do you see what happens when you allow the government to provide good shit for us?

My daughter had a chinese friend who lived in a "two family house" and the basement was rented out, the main floor was rented out and then the second floor was divided into 2 separate apartments. It's so ridiculous. Then my brother went house hunting and he walked into a house that literally was divided everywhere. He said there was atleast 20 people living in the house and he got turned off and didn't even want to see anymore after the basement and the main floor.
You can only fuck this borough so much for so long before little by little folks will "Oh, maybe we should have done something decades ago.
TOO FUCKING LATE. Queens is history and NYC is losing ground.
NYC, a text-book case of rampant careless over-development, greedy developers, crooked & inept elected officials, poorly run city agencies, wasted money on useless positions like Borough Presidents and Public Advocate, lack of enforcement of quality of life issues and allow folks & businesses to do whatever the fuck they want.
And you think this does not eventually catch up. Just like pollution, global warming and all the other atrocities of the world. It comes back to bite you hard on the ass.
I hear that my father's former house now houses 3-5 Chinese families! It originally housed a nuclear family of 4! North Flushing is rapidly turning into a total shithole!
And they're moving into Forest Hills in droves. Guess what they're up to?
CLOSE THE BORDERS!
As long as they vote Democrat and one party rule color means nothing
Dizzy Lizzy has a degree in urban planning
she can fix it
Yes, Joe. The infamous Tommy Huang, of RKO Keith's infamy, had a Forest Hills address, not far from the tennis stadium. So did his wife Alice Liu (as in cousin John Liu) live there and Tommy live in Douglaston?
I literally left my beloved Queena this week for the burbs. I swore I'd never do it, but felt I had to do it for my son. I'm so thankful that I was raised and educated in Queens. It was one of the best things to ever happen to me.

hate to break the news to you, but did you see what the burbs look like? go to jones beach and compare it only a few decades ago.

It's not inconceivable that's the case. If you're a middle class Chinese immigrant family that has lived there for thirty years and intend to retire and maybe sell the house or live in it the last thing you want are others ruining the property value of your home.

I know this guy who bought homes and turned the garages into apartments. He claimed he jumped through hoops to get the city to approve. One of his neighbor is not happy as you can imagine. He also turned the houses into apartments.
Basements were always rented out for decades. It's not new or unique to Asians. It's often people who can't afford the rent and just want anything like a basement near the subway and they're happy. And they are white not Latino, Asian or black.
go to jones beach and compare it only a few decades ago.
Omg....Jones beach has SO many illegals in it. I went there for the first time in 20 years last year and I thought I was on a beach in Mexico or somewhere in south america.
A call to the FDNY will shut down illegally converted fire trap divisions.
Forget Paul Vallone. He will just pour gasoline on the inflamatory problem.
Forget CB7. Apelian makes money off of Vallone's printing jobs.
And Mariyln Bitterman?
That poor befuddled overworked soul.
Not so befuddled that she doesn't know how to bank the $90,000+ yearly salary she makes.
Why would anyone want to travel so far to Jones Beach anyway?
Life is better at the Puerto Rican Riviera....Orchard Beach.
Why do you dumb buttholes keep on calling DOB? They take bribes to shut up.
Squeeze them where it hurts.
Look online.
If there is a mortgage on the divided house, contact the lender.
They might pull the mortgage and report the illegal conversion to the homeowner's insurance carrier.
You policy is null and void if it is covering solely a single family residence and you are running a rental business there.
Whew....talk about non conpost menti complainers beating the same old dead horse....the crooked NYC DOB.
Learn to think creatively and more effectively.
You deserve to lose your quality of life if you just sit on your ass and continue to apply the same old non working solutions over and over.
You do not screw two pieces of wood together by using a hammer to drive in the screws.
Capeesh, goombahs?
Asians do more illegal conversions than any other culture. Ask anyone who lives in Elmhurst and Flushing.
My block was predominantly 1 to 2 family in 1996. The demographics of my block has changed and so have the number of families living here. All the one family homes converted to 3 family. I lived it and see it every day.
Look at the historic farmhouse behind the track field by queens center mall.
Asian developers puts purchased the house next to it and are now building multi family apartments.
