$100M needed for huge streetcar depots

From Crains:

Missing from maps of a proposed streetcar route along the Brooklyn-Queens waterfront is where the de Blasio administration would locate the transit line's maintenance yard, which would likely be one or more facilities totaling several acres. The yard or yards would be needed to store and service the 47-car fleet.

The Brooklyn Queens Connector is a 16-mile streetcar line that would run from Astoria, Queens, to Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Currently, the de Blasio administration is conducting a wide-ranging study that will include recommendations on the streetcar's ideal route, along with how large the maintenance yard or yards would be and where they could be located.

Here in New York, Friends of the Brooklyn Queens Connector, a nonprofit that has promoted plans for a streetcar that were eventually adopted by the de Blasio administration, has suggested building two maintenance facilities at a total cost of $100 million. The group believes the yard or yards would require less than five acres.

Get some buses and use the money and the five acres to build some affordable housing.

Duh Blaz will dump it in Maspeth. And why not? REBNY sees it as New York's toilet!

They can't even finish the 2nd Avenue subway line after 40 years! So where is this money going to come from? Another mta fare hike? Fares up to 3.25/ride/person? I think it's so ridiculous that we have to pay to go to work. You're either paying a huge fare for tolls, more money for crappy and crowded train and bus services or you got lucky enough to live close to your job but just barely far enough where you have to drive and get stuck in one hours worth of traffic just to get there and then have to pay so much for parking. No wonder why so many people in nyc are on welfare and don't want to work!! But instead of improving roads and bus service and train service, dumblasio THINKS that a streetcar is going to save our overcrowded city? How about he start putting the dob to work and make them throw people out of their illegal conversions? How about making ins work more and throw the illegals out of this country? How about he stop building more and more "affordable housing" which isn't even affordable to begin with if you want to apply for housing in a decent and nice area? How about we send these homeless people back to the states where they came from and let them take care of them? Why does dumblasio have no real answers to any of this city's problems?

They are now realizing this, right. They didn't think of where to put these trolleys when they go out of service or need repair and maintenance.

But the gentrification industrial complex never looks at the big picture unless it's a pile of money and a massive portfolio first. This is going to fail big time.

with friends like these (of the brooklyn-queens connector, jesus christ) who needs enemies. Time to start a pac called friends of the destruction of political patronage and endemic corruption in elected office

The streetcars can use the underutilized 36th Street Yard in Sunset Park, near the Gowanus Expressway.

Nothing wrong with establishing a bus system from LIC to Brooklyn. Much cheaper and the city already has the buses. Use the billions from the rail project to fix the homeless problem. Start by building affordable housing.

No more building...........

Where is the maintenance yard?
Where is the money?
Where is the need?
Where is the customers?
Where is the brains?

REMEMBER ! Building more housing, affordable or market rate, does not satisfy the need for more housing. It simply draws in more people who claim there is a shortage. Stop the building ( overdevelopment) and stop increasing the need. WE HAVE NO MORE ROOM! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

This is the stupidest waste of money I've ever seen. Can anyone who runs this city grow some common sense?

We here in eastern Queens, more like Seoul these days, see so,little evidence of any city government whatsoever other than Tony Avella these days. The idea of this trolley is so absurd and sounds like another gigantic boondoggle from one of the stupidest mayors to walk the face of the earth. How about improving the subway and bus system already in place with that same money? Trolleys used for sightseeing in other cities like Denver are free and just work on a hop-on, hop-off system. Someone is,profiting from this crap, just like the new "hotels" in Fresh Meadows

Miami has free trolleys also, I love it.

I'm really wondering who's standing to profit from this boondoggle. Certainly isn't the taxpayer or the public.

>Stop the building ( overdevelopment) and stop increasing the need.

How do we do that? Bring back a crime wave? Get rid of jobs? Destroy city services?

There's no way to decrease the demand without decreasing what makes people want to live here.

Hey anon, you missed the point. We cannot stop the " need" or desire for "affordable" housing. However if we build this shit we simply create a new group of needy. As soon as the current needy get their shit a whole new group of needy show up looking for their shit. The real problem here in NYC is that we have run out of the land needed to keep on playing this loosing game. It is time to start telling people that they are responsible for their own shit and if they can't afford the real estate in the most expensive city in the country then they need to move somewhere that they can afford.

LaGuardia Airport needs rail. This streetcar line is ridiculous.

In other words, your sons and daughters won't get to live in the neighborhoods they grew up in, unless they have a trust fund? We should give up NYC to gentrification and accept that it's a playground for the rich with shelters for the poor, and us working class folks just ain't welcome anymore?

Yes that is correct, if your children can't afford the market rate in the neighborhood you raised them in or you don't leave them your home when you leave or die then they should not look to government to spend other people's money to make "affordable" homes for them. The result of this shit is the destruction of our neighborhoods from this over building and congestion, but more importantly it is destroying the fabric of our republic by destroying the rugged individual spirit and teaching your children to survive by sucking at the public tit.

Which do you want? The government to stay out of our lives and property, and let anyone build what they want? Or the government to intervene and stop the overbuilding? You keep advocating for both in the same breath.
