Sunnyside getting a park

From Sunnyside Post:

The site of the former Phipps Playground, a privately-owned lot located on the corner of 39th Avenue and 50th Street, is likely to become a city park.

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer has allocated $3 million for the purchase and renovation of the former playground, which is currently owned by DBH Associates, a development company.

DBH bought the site from Phipps Houses in July 2007 for $1.4 million. The former playground is located within the confines of the Sunnyside Gardens Historic District.

The old lot, where several generations of Sunnyside and Woodside children played, is one of the few depression-era playgrounds still in existence in the City. Its old shed, sandbox pavilion and swings and slides still remain intact.

See that? Certain neighborhoods get parks! What promises were made for this?

Why does he have access to millions of dollars for these projects all over his district when other districts go starving?

Jimmy is under a lot of pressure lately over the Elks Club fiasco and his 'secret' meetings behind the community and his early support of DeBlasio and the mayor's radical agenda.

The sleaze developing around the mayor is beginning to taint the "Sunnyside Gardens Kid"

Come on people, we should be happy that queens is getting more park space. Sunnyside currently has very few public parks, and we need one. I for one will be spending time there.

This will be a total disaster.
To curb the drugs and late night use The city will cut down all the trees (so passing patrol cars can see in) And WORSE install pastel colored stupid looking plastic looking kids stuff and Astroturf for feral children of illegal immigrants to litter, drool and piss on.
It will be no longer recognizable, this is an epic mistake

Does anyone remember when playgrounds had fun equipment like monkey bars, see-saws and swings that you weren't strapped into that you could actually pump up above waist level. They have all been replaced by brightly colored safe but boring confections. Can any child get the thrill from a rope bridge two feet above the ground to a yellow and blue plastic pirate's castle that reaching the top of the monkey bars gave you.

We try so hard to protect our children that they can no longer learn self-reliance. Let kids be kids!

Sure do "Knickerbocker" park @ Star street had all that stuff. My grandfather would take me for fresh hot off the conveyor belt Pretzel from Star bakery then we would go to the park. Bushwick was once a paradise, everybody knew everybody.
