City says mosquitoes won't breed at Astoria Pool
From NBC:
Scan Astoria Park with your eyes and it is hard to miss the high dive pool. The towering diving platforms have been closed to the public for years, but the pool beneath never stopped capturing rainwater.
On a recent Thursday, you could seeas a faded basketball floating in the cloudy water, and knee-high weeds growing out of the pool.
"It’s definitely a mosquito breeding ground,” said neighbor Ian Eastwick, as he walked by the abandoned pool. "That’s where they hang out. That’s where they come from."
"I think they need to clean it up, man," added Les Fernandez, as he finished his workout in the park. "This is a popular park."
In April, Mayor de Blasio announced a $21 million campaign to fight Zika. The strategy includes public service announcements, travel advisories and warnings to get rid of stagnant water that might be collecting in old tires, birdbaths and pools.
Despite those warnings, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation suggested the Astoria Park high dive pool does not represent a mosquito risk.
"The diving pool is maintained regularly by NYC Parks staff, including weeding, removing debris, and spraying for insects," Meghan Lalor, a Parks spokeswoman, wrote in an email to the I-Team.
"However, due to the nature of the deep pool, this work is difficult and requires specialized equipment."

Because the city told the Mosquitos not to breed.

This doublespeak is being used with the same subtlety and eloquence of the infamous Baghdad Bob from the first stage of the Iraq invasion/quagmire (remember that guy?).
The only nature that's problematic there is the gross vegetation from years of willful neglect not the deepness of the pool. It's a combination of it being too disgusting to touch and laziness.
Surprising that they left something in a hot real estate market in NW Queens to rot like that.
"However, due to the nature of the deep pool, this work is difficult and requires specialized equipment."
What a joke, get some of that sand from the hipsters in Ridgewood, and fill the pool in.
Seems like Vallone propoganda to start spending $24 million on the Peter Vallone Entertainment Venue that seats 150.
It stunk so bad even the city delayed spending money.
It is much easier to understand when you realize the goal isn't to stop Zika. The goal is to separate you from your hard earned tax dollars.
This will be the band shell...better entertainment for Astoria
Why not reopen and maintain the pool? Why was it shut down in the first place? Surely a tiny fraction of the billions the mayor wants to waste on a trolly for hipsters could be used to fix the pool?
Go to Walk In The Park blog, and there you will find your answer why this a petri dish and why other parks like Forest, Charles, Cunningham, Flushing, and even Van Cordlandt can't get the funding needed to maintain and preserve the areas.
Apparently that shit-talkin' "Candidate" Trump is above paying his fair share for running a hideous golf course. Sorry but this cremesicle weave turd cannot run this country, he seems to need a fall back job when the next bankruptcy claim arrives.

yes, that's right JQ. it's all Trump's fault. he's the reason why the city can't maintain the parks properly. it has nothing to do with the Left of Lenin, liberal asshole in city hall or his cronies thought the city.
But let's blame Trump because Killary is so much more of an upstanding person.
Not a Trump fan, but is it his fault that the Bloomberg Admin, gave him this sweetheart deal.
JQ,I saw Bush and Trump both piss in the pool, that's why it closed, thought you knew.
Gary is right, mayor fun size did give "the candidate" the park on a silver platter, like everything else he gained in his life. Did you people even read the G. Croft's post? Can you imagine what those millions they spent to make the Golden Bear's trip and stay in the city could have done to remediate all the hazards from some of our parks in Queens?
And the city does maintain the parks, but by preference. Examples, Central of course, but also McCarren and Prospect. Although unrelated, Forest Hills stadium got immense improvements after years of willful neglect.
I never suggested it was the orange man's fault, and I don't give a shit if he wins the election. After 8 years of enabling W and Obama and their coddling of the banksters and continuing cowardly indiscriminate bombing, this country apparently deserves what it gets.
And I definitely never have supported Manifest Hillary.

I don't give a fuck about labels and affiliations either. Now you all know. Enough with the troll shit.
We moved to 21st in July and are overwhelmed with the mosquitos. Have done everything we can with the yad but it hasn't made a change. Is it always this horrible?
