Don't we have enough junk on the sidewalk already?
These streetside mailboxes have been popping up all over the place in front of newly completed development projects. Why are we allowing developers to take over our sidewalks? Why not make them provide a mailbox on their own property?
I would think some of that was postal driven as well. I would think someone can't put up a box on public property and tell the postman to deliver to it, even if it is more convenient than delivering to individual businesses.
The USPS is trying to cut costs and is behind this.
I don't have a problem (outside that it makes your mail more vulnerable) but I do have a problem with bioswales cause they let developers use every square inch of back yards and cafes that hog up public sidewalks.
Because it is a new USPS Regulation. It is even proposed that in single family neighborhoods, they will be putting one at the end of the block. Door to door delivery is going to be a thing of the past, nationwide
I'm with QC on this one. Unless the USPS is so desperate for funds, which incidentally they are thanks to elected sociopaths in Congress, that allows for the placement of these boxes. It also might be the inconvenient truth that the predator devil-opers have complete control and carte blanche over any area they build on, thanks to submissive elected officials.
Although erecting these things is pretty dumb in light of the increase of mail theft in recent months. Look at those locks for chrissakes, they look like they can be jimmied with safety pin.
Then there are those illegal f-----g basketball hoops in goombah land....put up illegally by homeowners on sidewalk vege strips....along with those chained to the lamp posts publication boxes. Why doesn't NYC DOT come and haul them away and fine the perps who put them up? A lot of money by collecting fines to be made which could be applied to something useful.
It's not a matter of whether or not the Postal Service has authority over municipalities. If they won't do inside deliveries of mail, where else can you place the mail box stack? To QC, would you rather run to the PO daily to get your mail?
Crappy, within the decade, they will be stooping delivery to you mail slot, there will be a box on the corner, and yes, they have the right to install them, just like the blue drop boxes. Federal law, which trumps local
Nice but these are accessed from the sidewalk, by a carrier on foot. These are not "motorized city, rural, and contract delivery service routes so a carrier can safely and conveniently serve them without leaving his or her vehicle."

Why your neighborhood is full of Queens Crap
"The difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." - George Washington Plunkitt
The above organizations are recognized by Queens Crap as being beneficial to the city as a whole, by fighting to preserve the history and character of our neighborhoods. Could be coming from the USPS, too.

Does the USPS have authority over local municipalities? You generally have to go through DOT to put anything on a sidewalk.

They still deliver mail to my address. I have a mailslot. Problem solved.
Down with the basketball hoops - we've got 3 on a very short block taking up space where parking is at a premium.
Postal Service cant keep up and is phasing out door delivery, things in your own packaging including boxes larger then what would hold a wrist watch.

They jam it in Crappie's slot every single day, except Sundays and Holidays!
being a letter carrier, the USPS is telling developers to install these boxes.
there is no law and regulation. its a very firm suggestion..
congress needs to change the law for this to become mandatory.
i suggest you call your local congress member (senate and house) and tell them this is a bad idea.
Why is everyone hating on basketball???

Call DOT and have those hoops removed!
164St btw 33rd and 32nd has two. Take those down you dummies!
are hoops the same as rings?
The key holes fill with ice in the winter and the boxes can't be opened. Vandals love these things.
Why are people hating on basketball hoops? The street isn't just for people who own cars.
