Too many auto shops ruin Bayside

From the Times Ledger:

Several Bayside residents testified at a land use hearing last week to express their displeasure about an auto dealership being proposed for Northern Boulevard. They also decried the overabundance of shops and stores dealing with automobiles in the neighborhood.

The Land Use Public Hearing, which took place at Queens Borough Hall March 31, was presided over by Borough President Melinda Katz. The meeting included details on two items that had been considered by Community Board 11 at its monthly meeting in early March.

Helms Bros. Inc. applied to extend and amend the terms of its variance, which would let the company turn its auto repair shop at 207-22 Northern Blvd. into an automobile dealership. In addition, the owners of the Staples building at 209-30 Northern Blvd. wanted to make changes to the property’s parking lot. Both variances were approved by the community board with conditions, although 11 board members voted against the Helms Bros. variance.

Community residents Henry Euler and Mandingo Tshaka spoke in opposition to the change in the variance. Euler and Tshaka both testified that the immediate area was already overwhelmed with auto-related businesses, and Euler said the auto repair work currently done on the property had a low impact on the surrounding residential area. He was worried that an auto dealership would be far more burdensome on the neighborhood.

I'd rather that then another useless asian prostitution ring over there pretending to be a "spa"

If you're complaining about too many auto dealerships wanting to move into your neighborhood - clean, professional establishments that employ people for a livable wage, don't make a ton of noise in the off hours, nor attract skells or criminals, especially one that appears to be going through the proper channels without bribing anyone - you're wayyyy ahead of the game in Queens.

What are you talking about. The Asian mobs bought a lot of buildings and have setup late night "rub apartments" above storefronts on Northern all the way out to Great Neck Road in Little Neck.
People just haven't noticed what's going on yet or are afraid to talk, because they will be harassed, evicted or have the rent tripled. Same goes for any American owned storefront businesses downstairs !
Its all OVER when those leases in Little Neck, Douglaston and Bayside are up

Helms Brothers an auto shop? Really?
Helms Brothers is a fixture in the neighborhood!

Go clean up Depot Road and 164th Street, full of prostitutes and gambling.
Focus should be on criminal activity not on historic long time legit businesses.

Bullshit article.

Who the hell doesn't want an auto dealership? I'd rather that then another H-Mart, "spa," "church," "club room" (wtf is that anyway?), puppy mill store, herbalist, bbq, or whatever other nonsense we have too many of already.

And likely, its the zoning land land use boards that forced these businesses into one area.

Yes, nobody wants to live near a gas station, or a car dealership, or a restaurant. But they have to go somewhere, or you have to be willing to basically not own a car or go out to eat.

the worst negative impact on thisAuburndale/Bayside community is the SOCIAL ENGINEERS of the D.O.E force busing the elementary pupils away and bringing in out of area pupils to hijack their seats.WASTED TAX PAYERS$$$$$. Then claiming that the buildings are overcrowded,so that the elite can build new bldgs.,that will be filled with S.American illegal alien children/middle east refugees.

Isn't an auto dealer store a step up from an auto repair shop?

Even as an auto repair shop, I bet Helms park their luxury cars awaiting repair on their premise, unlike those independent shops who take in more cars than they can handle and hog residential parking or double-park.

Also, a pricey auto dealer doesn't attract hordes of traffic like a restaurant, supermarket if that's what people are complaining about. They can only fit a few Smart cars or Mercedes commercial vans there anyway.

Yeah, they should've repurposed the school yard with 40-foot container classrooms, like schools from Elmhurst to Corona that are like 3X over their intended capacity, instead of building proper classrooms. If you're complaining about the immigration and education entitlement issue then the DoE and gov't are just carrying out the law.
