Speed cameras - not just for school hours anymore

From the Daily News:

A pair of Queens lawmakers are pushing to drastically expand the use of speed enforcement cameras in the city to cut down on traffic fatalities.

State Sen. Jose Peralta and Assemblyman Michael DenDekker, both Democrats, will unveil a package of bills Thursday that will allow speed cameras to be placed in any of the more than 2,000 school zones in the city and keep them in operation 24 hours a day.

A law adopted in 2013 allows for only 140 cameras in the city school zones and limits their operation to school hours, the lawmakers said.

Where will they get the $$$ for this expenditure??

Oh yeah, from the Water Tunnel money the boy mayor stole from Queens and Brooklyn.

The City needs more money.

They are justifying this in the name of "safety"...

Simple. The A-holes want per mile tax implemented.
Cameras are big part of that infrastructure.
So us, taxpayers (serfs) will be fleeced several times over, first the cameras, then the fines, then the per mile tax.

most of the cameras they have now aren't anywhere kids walk. technically they are close to a school, but they put them on streets where there isn't anyone walking to school

I don't think those idiots thought this one out.

School zones have speed limits only during set school hours. Are they going to set these cameras to go back to the normal limit before 6 am and after 6 pm? Are they going to reset them for holidays? For Daylight Savings Time? For weekends?

Have we authorized speed cameras to be placed on streets (for 24x7)? As an electorate do we want cameras on every street that have the ability to send us a bill/summons?

Hopefully this gave those idiots what they want, their names in the paper, and they will quietly drop it when they see it isn't feasible.

Dont blame the mayor on that water tunnel, have you seen any of the local council talent saying boo about that?

Naw, bridges are fallowing down and they are building dog runs and underfunding the 7 for east river ferries.

Yes. And stopping work on a VITAL resource we will all need is not only ludicrus but a public safety issue. Where did this wunderkind get his brains? In a fruit loops box? I sincerely hope we have someone with at least half a brain to get this brainless wonder out of office next voting cycle. Man, we really need help here.

Did you know that speed cameras are only used in white neighborhoods
When they put them in low income area's they get destroyed very quickly so it makes no sence financially

Anonymous said...

These speed cameras are such a joke! I got one after all the kids were in school at the time! It got one by st francis prep getting off of the lie. It was 1 pm and there was NOT ONE KID IN SIGHT! I was like wtf?

A judge gave my X my house in a divorce with stipulations that all taxs now and in the future are hers, she sold it 4 years later and the tax franchise board sent me a 5000 dollar transfer tax bill for the sale,I sent them divorce decree that stated she was responsible for the tax, case closed.
Tax franchise board sent me a letter,WE DON'T HONOR DIVORCE DECREES AND HIT ME WITH 21 PERCENT INTEREST,I PAYED IT.
New York is Corrupt

White neighborhoods?

There aren't any left.

As for the cameras, there is no point putting them in the ghetto, vandalism or otherwise. they don't pay the tickets.

I noticed a speed camera on the Horace Harding intersection with College Point Blvd, with not a school nearby for miles. Also one on Kissena Blvd and Booth Memorial. Probably there are others outside school areas.

Its about more spying and stealing from the public.
You can bet to get even more funding and free money these cameras will be on a network and shared 24-7 live with both the state and federal government like big brother does in England.
Likely use the same software too !!

This makes money.

Anonymous said...

It's all about revenue.

"This makes money."

Drive by one of the traffic cameras and you'll see everybody knows where they are and slow up before they can be caught.
Also, the tickets are routinely challenged and dismissed. Plus no one gets points on their license because the cameras can't prove who is driving the offending car.

"Dont blame the mayor on that water tunnel,..."

It's on his watch therefore he shoulders the blame.

So, exactly what everyone predicted in the first place?

Why do I need to go superslow driving past a school at 2AM? It doesn't make anyone safer!

There isn't a different speed limit during school hours. The cameras are just supposed to be off during non-school hours. On Franny Lew the speed limit is 25, and that camera will ticket you at 32 - $50 out of my pocket for the experience. The one on Horace Harding eastbound by St. Francis is 30, and to my spouse's experience will ticket you at 37. The speed limit doesn't change.

These speed cameras are such a joke! I got one after all the kids were in school at the time! It got one by st francis prep getting off of the lie. It was 1 pm and there was NOT ONE KID IN SIGHT! I was like wtf?

This is during school hours. It's not just "when kids are around."

I noticed a speed camera on the Horace Harding intersection with College Point Blvd, with not a school nearby for miles. Also one on Kissena Blvd and Booth Memorial. Probably there are others outside school areas.
HH and CBP is a red light camera, not a speed camera, as are the cameras at Kissena and Booth.

Don't speed and you won't get a ticket !
What's so hard to understand ?

Anonymous said...

I have the plate cover that blurs the license plate and it works great, no tickets for nonsense. Also taking yellow duct tape and putting it over two letters on the plate works well and does not stand out. I drive safely, but its ridiculous to get a ticket for going 36 in a 25 mph zone where the roadway was clearly designed for higher speeds and it is safe to do so. They are really getting out of control with this nonsense.

I recommend that in lieu of the additional speed cameras and fines, and of the East River tolls, we New Yorkers each carry a box around our necks, and that we drop a Nickel in it each time we take a breath. Then we hand over the filled boxes to the politicians and the MTA for them to squander our breathing tax collection at their discretion. Children should also be included.

Garbageman wants to take your money, someone should see how he drives. Big brother is watching you.

There most certainly is. School zone limits are 15 or 20. Normal street, outside of school hours is 25 or 30.

Law? What law? In a Banana Republic?

Vision Zero is enforced by speed cameras. Read the signs, 25Mph speed limit is enforced by cameras.
Can be challenged, the city does not run the cameras, private company does on a revenue sharing agreement.
So every time they clip someone for speeding a private firm gets paid also.
Talk about fucked up.

It is absolutely necessary! I cannot describe but as murderous the behavior of drivers in Queens, especially in Ridgewood and Glendale!

Just give us your pennies and feed your children roots and we will leave you alone

Yes like people getting murdered by drivers who gives two shits about public safety !
Leave a few minutes earlier and slow the fuck down !

Driving in Queens for almost 40 years and I can honestly say most Queens drivers are getting very aggressive on the streets of North-East Queens. People are out of control and need to be reminded to share the road.

Pay your tickets and slow down !
Stop the crying about a small fine with no points.

Please show me a picture of one of these signs.
School on Frannie Lew near Station Rd - 25mph all the time.
IS25 Frannie Lew/35 Ave - 25 mph. Always.
Francis Lewis HS, SF Prep, 25.

You don't pay attention and you don't drive.

1 mile over the speed limit and you are getting a ticket, plus points.
The revenue generating scam has nothing to do with safety.

How is anyone comfortable with the idea of the government putting cameras everywhere, and following us everywhere we drive?

> I drive safely, but its ridiculous to get a ticket for going 36 in a 25 mph zone where the roadway was clearly designed for higher speeds and it is safe to do so.

THIS THIS THIS

>Stop the crying about a small fine with no points.

It's nice to know you don't have to worry about money or time, but working people do.

No I just worry more about killing someone with my car or bike! I drive and ride as safe as I can.

Limousine liberals and mentally disturbed progressives usually don't have to worry about anything else other than Global Climate Change (aka Global Warming).

And live comfortably on other peoples dime.

You shouldn't be riding or driving.

Not !

Well if people would stop jaywalking and crossing against the light they wouldn't be getting hit. I say if you want to fine drivers for this crap, fine. But go after the reckless bikes and the pedestrians jaywalking equally as well.
