The massive Hallets Point development will break ground this week on the Astoria waterfront after years of planning, according to the developer behind the project.
The Durst Organization will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the $1 billion project that will be built over the next seven years on a 7-acre parcel of land along the East River near 26th Avenue, First and Second streets.
It will have seven buildings containing more than 2,000 apartments, 20 percent of them affordable, as well as 68,000-square-feet of retail space with a supermarket, a waterfront esplanade and space for a school, according to the plans.

I lived in Astoria for 30 years and you couldn't pay me to walk/drive to that little corner of Astoria. The hipsters will love it.
I wonder if it will look better than than the LIC waterfront. I like Gantry Park but it needs more trees and benches. It looks very flat.

The waterfront continues to draw resources away from the rest of the borough. This area, like LIC, is a toxic brownfield lodged between two sewage plants, two power plants, next to a river that will flood its lobbies.
In the middle of no where - cheek to jowl with angry alienated housing project.
The Ditmars Line will be crowded while we piss away money on the ferry.
Regardless of the projects, this is prime waterfront.
Eventually all NYC housing projects will be cleared and converted into luxury housing.
Gentrification is the only legal means for REBNY to remove the undesirables of society.
And hipsters are notoriously stupid. They are easily sold on the idea of becoming pioneers in a new up and coming nabe.

Imagine the day the Astoria housing projects get luxurized?
