Still no cameras at Forest Park

From the Queens Chronicle:

Two years after Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven) secured $250,000 for surveillance cameras in Forest Park, the state Division of Budget earlier this month approved the funds, according to a spokesman at the agency.

Now, Miller said in a phone interview on Tuesday, the money must be released to the NYPD, which will purchase and install the cameras. The assemblyman hopes that process can begin before the new year.

The surveillance cameras were a major topic of discussion at last Saturday’s Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association meeting, where several residents said they would help with deterring crime in the park.

“Just like how we’re not going to let people force things down our throats, we’re not going to let people sit on things that we really need in our community,” WRBA President Martin Colberg said. “We’re at a point where there is no reason where this should still be sitting there.”

There have been some incidents in Forest Park recently that residents claim could’ve been deterred, or more easily solved by police, if cameras were present.

About two weeks ago, a body was found in the park near Woodhaven Boulevard and Myrtle Avenue. In June, a homeless man was accused of murdering a jogger around the same area.

There have also been a series of car break-ins near the park in the past few years.

If you go jogging in the deserted park at two AM and not expect to get attacked, you are too naive to live in this city and it will be a lesson in Darwinism.

Realize that the cameras are to "help" solve the crimes, NOT stop the crime.

Yes there is a minor deterrent effect, so the perpetrators move to an area out of the lenses' view.

We only need to surveil every square inch of the city, and all will be fine.

George Orwell could never have imagined the world we actually are living in.

I can save you $250,000.

Look for the guy in the hoodie...

WHAT A FUCKING SHAME. BORO PARK RESIDENTS GET CAMERAS BECAUSE OF A BIAS ATTACK ON JEWS AND WHILE WOMEN ARE GETTING RAPED, PEOPLE ARE GETTING ROBBED AT GUN POINT AND THE CITY LOOKS THE OTHER WAY. CAMERAS AREN'T THE ONLY ISSUE. WE NEED PATROLS, DRONES, SURVEILLANCE...

No cop,no pep....caveat emptor. But the uni tpke side should be safe with the 112 pct summons guy waiting for speeders. If he actually looks around,he might see something.

What the park needs is better lighting along with various other things. The problem is with police deployment. Clearly there aren't enough cops to patrol certain areas and are assigned to personal guards for politicos visiting and residential and homeland security. And that area has seen a rise in homeless people. Mentally ill and recidivist criminal homeless people.

Just be aware your surroundings. At all times.

It's nice to know that governmental incompetence is the thing keeping us from going full 1984. Meanwhile people are complaining that the police state isn't coming fast enough.
