Koo asks FAA to divert flight paths

From the Times Ledger:

City Councilman Peter Koo (D-Flushing) is calling on the Department of City Planning to work with the Federal Aviation Administration to consider reverting to LaGuardia Airport’s old flight paths if it cannot resolve the airplane noise issue.

Before 2012, flight paths were routed over Citi field, the tennis stadium and Flushing Meadows Corona Park but would be diverted over Flushing during the US Open. But in 2012, the FAA approved the Flushing flight path for general use.

In a response dated Dec. 2, to a draft document of the environmental impact statement for the proposed Flushing West waterfront development plan, Koo said low- flying planes and the noise have caused health concerns for residents in his district. He noted that the proposed development area would be directly under LGA’s current flight pattern.

Koo, who lives in downtown Flushing, said the FAA has not conducted a comprehensive review of the flight paths approved in 2012 and said he keeps his patio door closed because of the noise.

Let us get rid of all these terrible, planet killing aircraft and just ride bicycles.

We have all these pretty lines so we now know where to go.

You live in New York City for goodness sake.

What do you expect???

"Koo, who lives in downtown Flushing, said the FAA has not conducted a comprehensive review of the flight paths approved in 2012 and said he keeps his patio door closed because of the noise."

Which is it, Flushing or Port Washington? Because I find it hard to believe he lives in downtown Flushing with his financial expansions.

"The pre-2012 patterns include planes flying over Flushing Meadows Corona Park instead of over downtown Flushing and the homes of residents"

That statement right there is the root of the entire issue, and it took us a long time to get the press to understand it.

Also, a minor correction: Flushing West was NOT in 65 DNL under the old flight route. It is in 65 DNL now, with the new route.

Last thing: Yes, I knew the airport was there. No, I'm not moving. And no, we are not stopping this activism until we get our airspace back. Even if it takes ten years.

So when the people that live in Flushing complain about the flight paths effecting their lives, nothing is done.

BUT, if it effects the chance to pocket from a new development in the area, swift action happens. All it took was the Flushing West waterfront proposal for our great representatives to listen. Money really does talk.

The planes fly over my Rego Park home much more frequently now, too, I guess on their way to Flushing. Some nights it's one after another, every two minutes.

What? What?? WHAT????

I can't freakin' hear you!!!!

Councilman Koo should hold City Council hearings to propose passing a resolution, as have other cities.

Even in Whitestone the Jet noise and air pollution is terrible now that next-gen is being used at LGA !

For Runway 4, the noisy descent was and is over Maspeth, Woodside, and Jackson Heights. I have lived with it for 60 years and it will be that way until LGA is closed.

Koo is likely counting on the clout of big developers to help (re)establish an equitable distribution of flight patterns. Who knows, that may be a wise idea, as help sure isn't going to come from Schumer or Gillibrand.

Crain's recently ran article calling Flushing the "next big thing". That's nice, but it is unlikely to occur while the TNNIS departure route is in use (i.e. NextGen). I get the impression that the folks at Crain's don't leave Manhattan or Brooklyn very much...

The Rego Park flight route is called "Expressway Visual". It is not a NextGen route (yet) but its flight profile has been altered. The route had formerly used the LIE and Flushing Meadows in its final approach to runway 31, but now features a much wider arc over Rego Park, Queensborough Hill and Downtown. It is also much lower and faster. There is a great deal that LGA is doing to increase operational efficiency, and some of the changes haven't been publicized (but are certainly noticed by the public).

The FAA has taken its 2012 exception from environmental laws and applied it to nearly everything that it does.

Also, the new TNNIS departure route from LGA's runway 13 has shifted the Hamptons helicopter route over Whitestone. Of course heli's are being used more often, too.

Koo DOES NOT live in Flushing. He lives in Port Washington. I know his neighbor. He is a liar aside from turning his back on all of Flushing's ills. I moved to Port to escape this shit ten years ago.

Making the safest landing as possible is all that should matter.

Closing LGA to everything but small air traffic is one answer. It is an antiquated air field. Redesigning it, over and over, will never accommodate the heavy air traffic than emanates from it. Ah....but they will always be trying to load 100 pound of air traffic shit into the same old 10 pound bag of an airport. Besides....there is a lot of kickback money that finds its way into the pockets of our crooked pols from all of those perennial construction contracts awarded to these airport renovators.

The Jets that use NextGen during takeoff save the airline industry money on fuel.
The airline industry is putting profit ahead of safety and must be stopped.
My home in north-east Queens is being crop dusted by jet particulate matter.
The noise and air pollution has destroyed my quality of life and the flight patterns must changed back to taking off over the water, expressways and Flushing Meadow Park.

Living with these illegally changed flight paths is absolutely horrendous. Planes over your home every minute is something that no one should have to tolerate. I simply cannot describe just how life altering this is. We will not put up with it any longer, and those politicians who will not help us and do their job, will be voted out. Get the word out and vote them out.

I find it remarkable that before they changed the flight paths, they would divert plane traffic around the US Open because they know airplanes would be highly intrusive during the tennis matches, yet they permanently put these paths over peoples homes in 2012? Where is the thought process? What was dangerous and disruptive for tennis matches, is just fine for people living 24/7 under the paths!?!??!

About to be Ex-Flushing Resident from Flushing Queens says:
THIS IS FACT!!! PLANES FLYING OVERHEAD EVERY 10 seconds! Non stop! My house and every house is shaking and windows are rattling from the planes rumbling above at Sanford Ave and Beech Ave. How can any agency get away with victimizing residents like this? I'll have to move, since every year everyone becomes tone deaf to our legitimate complaints year after year after year. Hope this ends one day. Maybe it will take Trump to fix this. And you wonder my people give up on our government.
