Christmas in Hollis

From PIX11:

Darryl McDaniels, part of Run-D.M.C., returned to Hollis, Queens during Christmas time with a gift for kids — and he said it was better than toys.

McDaniels said he's trying to push them to explore the creative side of their minds.

"Not everyone has to be a baller it's okay to play piano or study ballet," McDaniels said.

"That was my house over there. I use to hop the fence and come over hear to rap on the corner," McDainels said while he walked through the streets of Hollis, where the creativity all began for him.

The town now has a mural on a wall at 198th Street and Hollis Avenue dedicated to his musical achievements.

McDaniels, who's now a comic book creator, is making it his mission to mentor kids. He spent Tuesday at Queens Central Library with community kids and families. He had one important lesson for them — to read as much as you can and expand their skills to be competitive adults.

Re the last graffiti story here and the mural in the background on this video.

That's how you do graffiti. And the borough is pretty lucky to have such a music legend still living and thriving in it.

Keep rocking the house DMC

a few rappers and athletes have escaped the ghetto
BUT
the real way to escape is education and marketable trades and skills
staying away from the gangs and drug trades
and the rappers that make it big end up dead or in jail by "keepin' ir real"

The original rappers were not into singing about hos, drugs or killing. They basically wrote standard poems and put a different beat to them. The gangsta mentality is what ruined rap.

It Also was ruined when they stopped sampling records and had to write their own music.

Rap is Crap without the C

The term Rap music is an oxymoron, It isn't music.
Ever see sheet music, notes and clefts for a wrap song ? You wont because it cant exists.

Daryl is a legend. Music and poetry loved by millions and he takes the time out to come back to the neighborhood to talk to the kids. Kudos to him.
Why are there so many haters here?

Daryl tells kids "go for your dream" meanwhile he is perhaps the only one from the neighborhood these small black kids view as an idol, an Idol handing out free stuff at that.
Daryl should know some responsibility comes with that kind of status.
Now a good 8 out of 10 "future sec 8 lifers" think they are gonna hip hop stars and refuse to learn any other skills, behave in school. Or even talk English !!
Ask any NYC school teacher that has to deal with this bullshit in the classroom every day. None of these kids (black or whit) from any neighborhood stand a chance of making an earned living in the entertainment business come a couple years.

Why is it that most blacks hve to put their steriotypical blackness as the most important aspect of their lives? Then they take it too far and have to shove it down your throat? Cant wait to retire and move away.

That is not graffiti. That was done with permission and may have even have been paid for.

But it was influenced by graffiti.

And if you go back to Run-D.M.C.'s first album everything from economic strife is mentioned and getting an education is promoted. It's not only about lame ass sucker m.c.'s, the way Jay cut the records and braggadocio.
