Hoverboards not legal
From the
Daily News:
An NYPD spokeswoman told the Daily News that according to sections 401-a and 401-b under New York State Law’s Article 14, NY Vehicle and Traffic Law, hoverboards are prohibited since they are considered motor vehicles that cannot be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
If someone were to get caught riding a hoverboard in the street, highway, parking lot or even sidewalk, they could potentially face a fine of up to $200. So just to be on the safe side, it's better to keep using hoverboards at the park and at home — or the office if your boss is cool with it.

What will Michael J Fox say???
Good. Not only did I suspect these shitty toys as illegal but also hazardous. And another sign of the ubiquity of laziness of this generation (worst ever) and the self-centered stupidity zeitgeist.
A bit much to describe this awful contraption yes, but when you see these being used, mostly by fucking adults it looks frightening. You can't tell if they will lose control. My biggest fear is these cretinous commuters will be dominating the streets and sidewalks once the proliferation of more micro apartments becomes a reality (Disturbingly, they already are)
If there has to be licensing for this, I suggest the first test would be if these tools can concurrently walk and chew gum.
These hoverboards are awesome, almost as good as walking!
No hoverboards, no drones, no laser pointers ...How is a person to have any fun?
why must we hate everything?
Next the government will take away your bikes, skates, and eventually your books and computers.
Why when anyone points out or has an opinion on something that's utterly stupid, useless, and menacing (I am sure that when dicks are on these zipping up the sidewalk they are scaring elderly people and parents with toddlers and babies, which I believe is the source for this policing concern) that they hate everything?
I like toy trains and processed cheese slices, so there you go.
Does this mean that those battery operated kiddie cars parents buy their kids so they don't have to exercise are also illegal?
Question: If hoverboards are illegal to use in the city, then why is it not illegal for them to be sold here as well??
We have an obesity problem?
Who would have thought...
Wonderful! Wouldn't want people getting around by themselves, especially kids! It's not like transportation is at a premium in this city or anything! DANCING IS FORBIDDEN! FUN IS ILLEGAL!
Why cant they do something about those g*d damn maniacs with a chip on their shoulder bikes.
I looked up Transportation Alternatives and they are funded by Bloomberg and developers. I like how they try to make it a populist effort when all it is is duping a much of knuckleheads into making a pain in the ass as they front for keeping the carbon foot print down to accommodate more development.
They'll crack down on the few of these around but do nothing about all the equally illegal food delivery scooters that drive on sidewalks, go the wrong way down one way streets, etc.
Safety concerns, anyone? http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/concerns-hoverboard-safety-35301827
Because, JQ, every comment you post makes you sound like a town councilman in Footloose.
Hey Russo,
Don't pick on the delivery guys! I like my food HOT!!!!
"illegal food delivery scooters"??
Illegal food? Illegal delivery? Illegal scooter?
Can some one tell me why it is that if I install a little, tiny 1/2 hp gasoline engine on my bicycle and ride it in the city it is illegal because it is an unregistered motor vehicle, but if if I purchase an electric (green- save the planet bike) I can wiz around the city without a registration or license and no one seems to get upset and the NYPD will not bother me. Is it because it is electric and we all get that warm fuzzy allegedly zero carbon footprint feeling and the fact that it goes just as fast as a gasoline bike is irrelevant? I mean every food delivery man/ boy is driving one of these motor vehicles that reach speeds of 20 MPH or more and none of them are registered. What the fuck is going on here? Is saving the planet worth any cost?
Tax them! They will disappear!
I agree with the other comment, I mostly see adults with these stupid things. I even saw a guy riding on one at Bj's. I was like you got to be kidding me. Just waiting on people to get punched in the face and the hoverboard stolen like what's happening with the Iphone's.
Because, JQ, every comment you post makes you sound like a town councilman in Footloose.
Because I think these hoverboards are stupid and encourages more laziness.
And did you see the dancing in that film you mentioned? It was like full body dry heaves in motion. Or spasmatic boogie fever. I thought Lithgow and those council people were trying to save those kids from embarassment.
and those fundamentalists wouldn't use the word dick to describe them, dick.
I once saw a kid about maybe 6 or 7 in a battery powered sports car hit a crack on the sidewalk, fell out and scraped the skin off his arms. For the life of me, I don't know how those things got approved as toys safe for kids.
Jq, lighten up and stop calling people dicks.
I only called one person dick here, I assume the one who accused me of being an small town oppressor, and the reckless imbeciles who I have seen zipping up the streets and sidewalks acting like they're immune to vehicles.
Why do individuals suggest someone to lighten up can't take dissent?
I recognize your rights to enjoy your these iphone/droid controlled overpriced dollies, consumers. Just be responsible and stay out of my and others personal space.
