From
NBC:
A 19-year-old man died in a wall collapse at a Brooklyn construction site Thursday morning, police say.
Emergency officers were called to the site, a future apartment building, on Myrtle Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 11:30 a.m. when a cinder block wall collapsed, trapping three people, police said.
"They were underpinning the foundation of a wall and they didn't have it supported properly and the bottom of the wall came out and tumbled on top of them," FDNY chief John Rozas said.
The 19-year-old man was taken to Brooklyn Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other two men were taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
This happened just after the
DOB announced it was cracking down on bad contractors.

Another death by wall collapse. Why does that seem to happen so often? 19 year old worker?
Expect more casualties. With the lightspeed rapidity of superfulous development under the guise of the affordable housing needs, which if anyone as figured out by now is an oulandish farce because 20% and even 30% is not enough to help homeless and even middle class and working poor families and indiviuals to qualify for these dwellings.
But what these current death traps are really are commodities for hedge fund investors.
Wasn't the deal involving these developments and how they can't be done about the wages of the workers, how much this kid get paid?
Wanna bet, untrained day laborers?
But wait, we can't afford to use Union Labor, maybe if enough people die while building "affordable housing" we won't have to build so many units.
Let me guess: No permit, paid off inspectors, untrained workers, not following standard safety procedures, cash job, contractor with previous record of accidents, no insurance. Any or all of the above.
This is to be expected on a somewhat regular basis when the DOB does not have plan examiners that know how to examine a building plan. What we must realize is that the vast majority of the building construction and renovation plans are self certified by an architect or engineer. The DOB has no one qualified to examine plans for code compliance. The problem becomes much more dangerous when you find that there are many architects and engineers who live out of state and illegally cover up, or rent their license, to unqualified expediters or developers. The same illegal activity is rampant with licensed plumbers and electricians. The DOB knows all about this. The legitimate trade associations have been complaining to DOB for decades but DOB can't see to or does not want to crack down on the culprits. So who benefits from this crap? The real estate industry and the developers who get to build more garbage at prices below what it costs to do right.
The qualified workers, both Union and non Union and the legitimate design professionals and contractors all get screwed to make real estate happy.
See, only six posts. Nobody gives a damn. Collateral damage....easily dismissed these days.
We are used to mega catastrophes that grab bigger headlines. The desensitization of our human culture is almost complete.
