From Cleanup Jamaica Queens:
Day 258 since my first complaint of illegal truck driving on 170th Street in Jamaica (although this has been going on for years on this street as well as others in Jamaica), but very little being done by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and her borough hall crew of political welfare cases (lots of talks about meeting, an inter-agency task force, yada, yada, yada. Department of Transportation, while it set up a temporary sign on Jamaica Avenue (although the majority of trucks come onto 170th from Liberty Ave) has done little on the issue and they still have not put up a sign at 170th (though I have been informed that one will go up in mid August). Of course our elected officials from Senator Leroy Comrie to Councilman I. Daneek Miller have been quiet on the issue, only Senator Tony Avella's office has reached out and Community Board 12 has been its usual ineffectual entity. BOTTOM LINE: We need total enforcement and everyone to work on this major quality of life issues, that poses noise and safety issues, pollutes our air and damages residential streets.

Enforcement will only happen if the enforcers know what they're supposed to be doing, and are told to do it, and if ALL parties are in accord. I've been fighting the 53' truck invasions for a long time - since QC first linked us to the specific section of the NYS Vehicle Traffic Law. There is NYPD denial that the law applies. There is the inevitable "jobs, jobs, jobs" response. And, it doesn't matter: NYC DoT issues so many permits, they're not even sure of the total number. DoT does not understand that those permits apply to non-divisible loads... total crap.
if this is illegal, why can't anyone find a lawyer who will take up a class action lawsuit? find a few people with asthma or some other problem and sue the trucking companies
What ever happened to putting a big pipe with changing chains to prevent trucks from entering? The question would be how fire trucks would then enter, though.
