City trucks to have safety guards

From AM-NY:

A number of city trucks will get safety guards to keep bicyclists and pedestrians from getting caught under their wheels, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday.

As part of his Vision Zero street safety program, 240 city trucks -- salt spreaders, container trucks and dump trucks -- will be fitted with side guards between the rear and front wheels.

The test run for the equipment could be expanded to 4,734 trucks in the city's fleet of 27,000 vehicles, according to the mayor's office.
"Installing side guards on our city trucks will help prevent fatal collisions," de Blasio said.

"to keep bicyclists and pedestrians from getting caught under their wheels"

Machines, especially automobiles, taking precedent over people's lives....

How often do pedestrians and cyclists get caught under the truck wheels?

If people would just stand on the curb and stay alert until a truck finishes making a turn, a lot of these accidents would stop. I see people not paying attention to their surroundings even though they do have the right of way. You cannot trust a tractor or a bus to be paying attention 100% of the time. Likewise drivers cannot trust pedestrians to be paying attention 100% of the time.

Why would anyone be riding a bike on a day when salt spreaders are out?

This is NOT going to stop people from walking into the sides of vehicles.

Another knee jerk reaction to a rare problem.

Stay on the curb if a truck is turning in front of you.

Don't ride your bike along the side of a truck.

Why do reasonable actions if the politicians will just throw our taxpayer money at the problem so they can claim they did something.

Sure people are the problem never paying attention to when they are walking, but trucks are too blame as well and this only applies to DSNY, what about all those damn private haulers.

Bottom line and this goes to the article below about Vision Zero. Vision Zero sucks and it does not do what it is supposed to. One of these things that sound good on paper but if not implemented well, then it does not work.

More like VISION SUCKS.
