From DNA Info:
The Department of Education is short "hundreds" of universal pre-k seats for the next school year in Corona and Jackson Heights and has asked a local politician for help in finding space, she said.
Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras said in her State of the District speech on Feb. 18 that the DOE needed to find space for hundreds of kids who will start universal pre-k in September.
She urged "non-traditional" spaces and nonprofits to come forward if they have accommodations that can be made available for the program.
District 24, which encompasses parts of Corona, Elmhurst, Ridgewood and Middle Village, is the most overcrowded in the city.
Last June, 70 percent of applicants in the district were denied their first choice of programs and kids were waitlisted for other programs as more seats opened up.

I am tired of all the ideology supporting illogical decision making. Someone should really step in and do something when people are having too many children they simply can not afford--when will these people realize the immense burden they leave on society and their own off-spring when they repeatedly make poor life choices! And to those who say: they're already here so deal with it...we are non-voluntarily dealing with it as in cases like the ones in this article smh...
We can't get schools but homeless shelters, no problem.
I remember having class at PS 89 in the late 1970's in a gym. Overcrowding is not new to this district or any in NYC. This is the price of not keeping up with the times.
The answer, of course, it to raise taxes, again.
Sorry - there's no room left at the inn. Too many illegals and homeless families who come from other states because of our generous benefits. Feel sorry for the average taxpayer, who pays high real estate taxes on their homes but have to send their children to private school because all the seats are taken and the illegals catered to.
Figures it'd be in some areas where illegals are heavily populated.
If we started deporting people like we should be then maybe the schools would not be so overcrowded.
watch them dust off the trailers that were recently moved off some high and grade schools to put these kids in.
Yes JQ! That's exactly what they did this year! How come no public outrage? Those TCUs are disgusting. The overpopulation has reached epic proportions. At some point some intervention needs to occur.
