Building needs to clean up its mess

From Cleanup Jamaica Queens:

164-03 89th Avenue. From looking at this building you would not think anything, but a closer inspection, which I did, shows a major garbage issue with this building, some of it in clear view for all to see.

Leave it as is. This is what tourists want to see.

They will ignore the area until developers show up, then the money they have siphoned out of the community by cutting back on services to cover the East River Waterfront development will come home again - for the Jamaica development.

How is it that the reporters and Realtors hyping this area never see the disgusting reality that is Jamaica - indeed most of Queens!

Because just like the elected officials they choose to see what they want and ignore these in your face issues.

It is not like this mess or any of the others I have documented over the years are hidden. For the most part these are in plain sight for all to see.

It doesn't matter that a developer see a neighborhood at large. As long as they can build something on any vacant plot of land and get paid, that's their concern. The fact that the adjacent blocks are plagued with crime and disorder don't concern them in the least bit. That's someone else's problem. We need commitments from developers to work with communities, get involved with local programs that improve surrounding areas, and not just "Build and Run".

This is an awful mess! If I were a resident of the building, I would get a broom, shovel and some garbage bags and help clean up the trash. Unfortunately, many people feel it's not their responsibility or their job. I suggest someone give it a try to clean up the garbage - it might just spark others to do the same. I am always picking up trash in the subway and streets - sometimes, i get the nicest compliments! I am not Bette Midler, but I try to do my part!
