Why leave out the I? Because it makes Flushing AKA "FLU-SH-NG" more in line with hipster/gentrification naming schemes. Spanish Harlem = SpaHa Triangle Below Canal = TriBeCa South of Houston = SoHo Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass = DUMBO and now Flushing = FluShNg Damned rent raising fools!
Want lower rents anon? That means you need more competition in the real estate market aka more apartments. There are over a million apartments you could add to the market right now, and wouldn't even require any new construction. But no, we have to let people stay in their rent control units for $300 a month, so the lucky few who knew the right person and so could snag one of them can afford a nice house in the Hamptons, just like we let the teachers and police and fire unions fiscally rape the hard working serfs of NYC.
This silly and useless marketing ploy was hatched by our wonderful NYC board of tourism about 2 years ago. .... at a cost of $3million. Ridiculous! What a waste! Wanna buy a vowel ?
So public servants rape the city? As a teacher I work 2 or 3 jobs to keep my family fed and clothed. No raise in years, a 1.8% increase in September and the rest of raise 2 years after contract expires. Who's getting raped now?
That sign is the stupidest waste of money. Who's responsible? I want their heads! (and my tax dollars back) Spend that money cleaning up all the garbage in Flushing and teaching people the speak English.
Don't you get it? It's pronunciation! That's how the vibrant and diverse in the area say it. Gotta emphasize that "SHNG" part to get the real sense of what Flushing has become. SHTTY.
"why would you emphasize the letters that conjures of bowel movements and urination?'
as from a marketing standpoint, today's mad men and ladies are all narcissistic hipsters.look at every commercial on tv,all faux boho types.these maggots are selling themselves.
Ever show up at an office supply store in August/September? And society wonders why there are so many hooligans wandering the streets today. It's quite obvious the city is desperate for teacher even if they go out of state to meet the requirements.
With a city whose school system has 60% of its students reading below grade level and a 35% drop out rate, this marketing scheme is the worst idea ever!!!
This is the perfect thing to aid immigrants in learning English. Teach them the wrong spelling from the start. Soooo stupid.
But I don't think it's the same as your Soho, Dumbo and Tribeca type of names. Those are more abbreviation-acronym combos. In Queens, MidVille and FoHi are along those lines.

NYC is an insiders game.
I never understood the purpose of reducing the number of market rate apartments. And people wonder why rent in the city is so damned expensive.

I have no idea what any of that means. What is "neighborhood x neighborhood"? Honestly, why must everything be so inside nowadays?
This is a classic example of an ad agency Art Director being more concerned with "the visual" rather than content. Time to get a new proofreader.
I believe the "x" is supposed to mean "by" as in multiplication. (Like a 2 by 4)
It's friggin stupid.

This, again, is just stupid.
