A jury took only about 90 minutes Tuesday to convict former New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran of bribery charges in a scheme to buy a spot on the mayoral ballot for state Sen. Malcolm Smith.
Mr. Halloran was also found guilty of taking payoffs from what he thought were developers who wanted him to funnel city money their way. The men were actually an FBI agent and an FBI informant.
The 42-year-old Mr. Halloran spent five days on the witness stand in federal court in White Plains, N.Y. He faces up to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced Dec. 12.

Changing the subject doesn't change what Halloran did. Don't make excuses for what he did. He wasn't a schmuck; he was a crook. All of the testimony, all of the recordings show that he knew exactly what he was doing.
The sad thing about Queens is, despite a steady stream of arrests as of late, the politicians increasing walk around with a chip on their shoulder (Jimmy Van Bramer Exhibit A).
As Queens falls further and further behind the rest of the city and it becomes apparent with each day that they are not doing their job, their hold on the public grows even stronger.
Let this be a lesson to any future Queens republican office holders. Hire that bad luck charm, Lynda "Lets swap partners,sweetie" Metzger, and you're doomed. Right, Dennis?
