The rooftop sign above Sunnyside Community Services is in for a makeover.
The sign, which is currently covered by graffiti, will be replaced with a 7-color mural that will feature a steam engine train and the word Sunnyside in large letters.
The new mural will help revitalize the rooftop at SCS and will be visible to 7 train riders going between the 33rd and 40th Street stations.
The mural has been designed by Mark Salinas, a local artist, who did the Rise N Shine painting on the corner of 42nd Street and 48th Avenue last year.
Salinas formed an organization last year, called 7Train Murals, that is dedicated to beautifying the neighborhoods along the 7 train line in Queens.

What does a steam locomotive with a cowcatcher have to do with Sunnyside?
If you want to "beautifying the neighborhoods along the 7 train line in Queens" doing murals is a waste of time.
Bring in some prisoners from Rikers with power washers and clean the streets.
What about the thousands of other rooftops along the 7 line that are drenched in graffiti? It's disgusting!
Speaking of views from the train, when I was on the LIRR train from Broadway to Penn Station a few weeks ago, I was disappointed when I didn't see the usual OT quotation on the Korean New York Presbyterian Church. Anyone know if it's just because of construction or are they planning something new?
Sunnyside has a long railroad tradition with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Sunnyside yards, etc. so a steam locomotive is not out of place for a mural.
There's an old photo circa early 1900s that shows a steam locomotive chugging past farmland in Sunnyside.
Bring back the Tin Woodsman in Woodside!
Yup! The Tinman - I'll drink to that. Where is he indeed "hiding"? Maybe resurrect him, if he still exists, at the site of Civic Virtue on QBlvd?

Who gives a shit about some train. I liked the grafitti. The good peices had character.
