From the Times Ledger:
Carmel Fromson knew something was wrong when she woke up in the middle of the night with excruciating pain in her eye.
She had been out rowing on Flushing Bay hours earlier with the Empire Dragon Boat Team when she got some water splashed on her face. Unfortunately for Fromson, the area’s waters receive approximately 10 truckloads of human feces a year from sewer overflows that empty into the bay, according to researchers.
Fromson went immediately to the emergency room and required antibiotics to deal with an infection that was festering in her eye.
The constant flow of sludge into Flushing Bay is a problem the Empire Dragon Boat Team, which consists of 32 breast cancer survivors, has been dealing with for years.
The team, which was founded five years ago, uses the bay to practice twice a week. Raw sewage overflows into the bay anytime there is even minimal rainfall because the city’s sewer system cannot handle the extra water. It is not uncommon to see used tampons, condoms and feces floating in the water.
Awesome, where do I sign up?

I've seen illegals fish out of those waters. I hope it's just catch and release.
Sounds like the Estero Sagado to me.
Ladies,
DO NOT FLUSH YOUR TAMPONS!
This is nasty.....flushing is so disgusting! Have you ever taken the seven train just between flushing and Willets point? It smells disgusting crossing over that water!
Dont worry. The Vallones have been working on the smell for over 20+ years. Millions spent on the Army Corps.of Engineers dont studies on how to eradicate the smell. And like usual, NOTHING. Lots of talk and wasted money, all just to look good. They dont care, they live down on Shore drive where you cant smell it. But the kids in PS 2 suffer and so do thousands of taxpayers.
It has smelled that way for well over sixty years.
Let's see, you survive cancer and then go boating in Flushing Bay? What are they thinking? Do they have a death wish?
Anon #1--Why should it be catch and release? The waters of Flushing Bay, and the fish that live in them, are probably quite a bit cleaner than the waters in the illegals' home country. A friend of mine just came back from a SCUBA diving odyssey that took him to places such as Egypt, Mozambique, Indonesia, Malaya, etc. He noted that in much of the world, disposing of garbage and sewage in the coastal sea is normal, and given the population densities in such places, the bays and harbors are little more than open sewers. But folks eat the fish caught in them every day. We shouldn't expect that to change when they come over here.

heh got that right...
Ask the typical Astoria nitwit and they will tell you what Vallone tells them - there is a sewage plant in Randals island (outside his district) and there is nothing than can be done but putting perfume in the air.
There was a July 4 fireworks event so bad it stunk the park.
A great place to build 1000s of apartments don't ya think?
PS Bowery Bay has a sewage plant but since the Vallones don't mention it the plant does not exist.
You would think that UCCA with its incessant whining about the airport would mention the plant but then again, if Peter says it doesn't exist well dammit it does not exist.
End of discussion - Astoria style!
FYI both Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay have had sewage outflow and/or overflow since at least the 1930's. Yes, it's disgusting, but it is not a new discovery.
Hell, it smells a lot better than it did in the 80s. Thank you Julia Harrison!
Peter Vallone Sr's district stretched from Astoria to his Malba home until 1991, therefore including Flushing Bay.
