Council member supports train to LGA

Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez says that NYC's growing population and overcapacity at LaGuardia requires the construction of a rail link from Manhattan to LaGuardia.

There is a rail line adjacent to LGA that was constructed about 10 years ago. It runs across Northern Blvd, Astoria Blvd along 69th St. Nobody knows why it is there. Was it built with the intent of future rail service to LGA? Anyone know about this.? Take a look. The tracks run adjacent to the BQE but no trains ever been seen. A mystery.

This should have been done decades ago, especially for JFK. NYC is so far behind other major cities in the US and around the world when it cones to mass transit! We are not the greatest city in the world, although dumb politicians would like everyone to think that.

They will put the line down 19th Avenue and the developer ready to hack apart the property around the Steinway Mansion will make a killing.

Running rail to La Guardia from Manhattan means extending the Astoria El. Locals complained too much last time so that got dropped.

Airport connectors don't get great ridership, this is really only worth doing if you get two or three stops in that part of Queens before hitting the airport, because then you get to share the cost with bringing transit to underserved communities.

I'm sure this councilman from upper Manhattan could find other issues of interest that serve his constituents well than by trying to extend his influence into Queens.

We have our own council members to attend to our transportation needs.

Or perhaps the councilman prefers to keep "in touch" with people in other boroughs.

The track next to the BQE is the New York Connecting Railroad. It is a freight line that goes from the Brooklyn Army Terminal to the Hells Gate Bridge that is parallel to the Triboro/RFK.

This lowlife fuck Ydanis Rodriguez should go back to driving a taxi

Never knew that about the NY Connecting RR. Thanks.

Would be so easy and obvious to extend the Astoria terminal to LGA but the taxi lobby blocks it

I would like to see something go up Junction Boulevard. It could start at Queens Boulevard with a link to 63rd Street Station, make a stop at Lefrak, Roosevelt, Northern and Astoria Boulevard.

The NY Connecting Railroad right of way could be extended along the eastern spur of the BQE to the east of St. Michael's Cemetery towards LaGuardia Airport.

Extending the Astoria E is exactly the way to do it.

Anyone who wants to extend the Astoria El to LGA can go fuck themselves

Yup. That's what happened last time. NIMBYs killed the project so no rail to the airport or to the transit starved communities near it. So to get to LGA you need a bus or taxi. The Q70 really isn't that bad though fwiw.

Nothing like a calm, rational and specific discussion on the issues.

Another one of those Vallone Vandels that has been around like most of that community board for decades.

Harps on one issue - airport noise - for decades. Gives Crowley a good excuse to look like he is doing more than fund raising for the party by getting headlines that he is getting funding for blah blah blah.

She runs the a 'civic' in the sense that Dutch Kills has a civic but is something that would not be recognized as one in the (ahem) better parts of the city - a real estate broker with a chip on her shoulder, and a close friendship with Vallones, on that infamous community board, and has given $1000s to the councilmen in her district in the past few years.

She runs 'Town Hall' events where you can ask your elected questions - questions that can immediately be redirected to several dozen commissioners from a bevy of city agencies - responsibility is deflected in the matter of seconds from those responsible.

I can go on but you all get the picture.

So because of her and a handful fo coddled neighbors, 10,000s have to take expensive cabs to the airport each year.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to acknowledge the achievements of the United Community Civic Association (UCCA) on the occasion of its annual holiday champagne brunch. I ask that my colleagues join me in saluting UCCA's distinguished honorees: Assembly Member Michael N. Gianaris, Council Member Peter F. Vallone, Jr., Gerald J. Walsh, and Dr. Arthur N. Gualtieri.

The United Community Civic Association is one of the Queens community's foremost neighborhood organizations. Deeply committed to the improvement of the Queens community, UCCA has remained vigilant on a variety of issues relevant to Queens residents, including airport pollution and health concerns.

Furthermore, UCCA is an important catalyst for community pride and involvement. UCCA hosts a yearly candlelight ceremony honoring the firefighters who lost their lives on September 11 and organizes the annual Flag Day Parade in Queens.

These events are moving tributes to the best America has to offer, and are always beautifully done.

UCCA is also known for its tradition of excellent leadership. UCCA's president, Rose Marie Poveromo, has served as a pillar of the Queens community through her leadership and activism.

She has contributed to community dialogue on issues of public concern and sustained the spirit of civic participation so important to our Nation's health and well-being.

The recipients of UCCA's ``Men of the Year'' awards, Assembly Member Michael N. Gianaris and Council Member Peter F. Vallone, Jr., have outstanding records of public service and community activism. Representing the 36th Assembly District in Queens, Assembly Member Gianaris has established himself as an effective and smart legislator, authoring many public safety measures to enhance New York's security after the attacks on New York on September 11, 2001.

A lifelong resident of Queens, Assembly Member Gianaris has committed himself to improving the community in which he grew up and has provided the residents of Queens with impeccable leadership.

Council Member Peter F. Vallone, Jr., also has shown exemplary public service to our community. A tireless advocate for public safety issues, Council Member Vallone has led the fight to keep illegal guns off of the streets of New York City. Council Member Vallone has also been a strong advocate for environmental rights, introducing bills to curtail the carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.

Gerald J. Walsh, this year's recipient of the Valerie Fisher Community Service Award, was born and raised in Queens and is a longtime community activist and leader. Currently the Deputy Director of Computer Operations Hardware and Financial Information Services for the City of New York, Mr. Walsh is the President of the Dutch Kills Civic Association and also serves as a member of the 114th Police Precinct.

Dr. Arthur N. Gualtieri, the Deputy Commissioner at The City of New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and former Medical Director of the Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens, is being recognized with the Special Award of Recognition. A devoted public servant, Dr. Gualtieri is both a physician and a lawyer and a member of both the Queens County Bar Association and the Queens County Medical Society. As a resident of Astoria, Dr. Gualtieri continues his devotion to the Queens community by serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Astoria Civic Association, SHAREing & CAREing, and UCCA.

Mr. Speaker, I request that my colleagues join me in paying tribute to the United Community Civic Association and its celebrated honorees: Assembly Member Gianaris, Council Member Vallone, Mr. Walsh, and Dr. Gualtieri.

The new MTA bus to LaGuardia is excellent. It makes no local stops and runs on the highway.

Baloney Maloney manages to honors Vallony, Astoria Civic, UCCA, Dutch Kills Civic, Povoromo all in one long winded speech.

THAT's living no rock unturned.

Sure, always start my out of town trips taking the train to get a bus on 125th Street.

Its about as useful as that wonderful bus that goes to Rikers - makes very few stops and is almost always empty.

Something is wrong when a few old ladies of UCCA (without even a website) ties up a city of millions.

Does anyone on this blog have the balls to insult my civic to my face. My civic works very hard to get community problems solved and we have great relationships with city agencies and our elected officials. Most of the other civics in Astoria just bitch and moan and sit and insult my civic because they can't get the results that we do.

Sure, Roosevelt, Broadway, BQE and Grand Central.

After you tackle any Queens bound train during rush hours.

Speedy indeed.

You forgot to mention Mystery Man Mike Gianaris, quick with a stop sign if needed, and a member of what is widely considered the most ineffective legislative body in the country.
