From the Queens Courier:
Luxury will meet camping on Rockaway Beach if a Kickstarter campaign can help fund the project.
Inspired by the tent colonies of the 1900s, the idea to bring “glamping” to the shores of Queens is the brainchild of New York-based designer and founder of Milktrout LLC, Kent Johnson.
Camp Rockaway, a chic tent-hotel, combines “beach camping heritage with modern amenities,” according to the project’s Kickstarter website.
It will feature safari-style canvas tents on a landscaped campground overlooking Jamaica Bay and just a short walk from the beach. Each tent is fully furnished, with real beds, crisp, linen white sheets and summer-weight blankets. Amenities include private fire pits, outdoor showers and hot tubs overlooking the bay.
Johnson hopes Camp Rockaway will aid in the community’s efforts to restore the beach following Superstorm Sandy.'
You really gotta love begging for money to start your business. And producing a video comprised entirely of white folks but talking about how "diverse" the area is that you plan to gentrify. "Luxury will meet camping..." Camping generally means roughing it, so why the hell does one need luxury to go with it? Throw in a Superstorm Sandy reference...because you're doing it to help Rockaway recover!
The funniest part is that the renderings show some kind of paradise, with clean white sands, no junked boats and no housing anywhere. Okay!

Camp and be robbed in style!
It would be interesting to see how they plan to keep the area secure...having been a Rockaway beachgoer for 50 years, I can't imagine sleeping soundly on that beach with full confidence my wallet and carkeys (and in this case, my luxury tent) would still be there when I awoke!
This is the nuttiest idea of the year! And if there is a thunderstorm, where does everyone seek shelter ???
The beach is the most dangerous place to be when there is lightening.
HAH!! is this the post-modern version of Hooverville for the disenfranchised middle class?
repulsive
The skinny limbs and affected voices of Generation Gentrification has arrived and is ready to renaissance everyone out of town. The audacity of this video is mind-blowing.
Renaissance?!what a fucking insult to the people living there.Diversity? All I saw where ignorant oblivious white posers.
tents don't have queen size beds.A transit bridge is not a beautiful sight and neither is the destroyed boardwalk.
not one penny for these marauders.the only thing missing from that video is a drawing of a glass dome covering from averne on the sea to beach 92nd st.
I suggest a spot near the Redfern Houses, so quaint,
Hipsters,hipsters,hipsters!
Will the magical blue and purple buses be there, too?
"Quietness and calmness," the female narrator says. I suppose it's easy to ignore the jets landing at JFK Airport.
yes like the gang violence bungalow they tried to pull on rockaway??
'community
' is the buzz word they use as a smokescreen for--their agenda
;make $$$ off Rockaway while bringing in all their GENTRIFCATION HIPSTER/YUPPIE crew and pushing all locals out!!!....in their attitude "poor people dont deserve to live near the beach...
Can't blame the hipster opportunists in their hunt for valuable real estate. They will buy waterfront properties for a song. I'm waiting for the Queensbridge Houses to be sold off to the highest bidders. Nice apartments and a great view of the Manhattan Skyline. The developers, politicians and real estate mongers don't or won't care about all the displaced poor residents. It's all about the money baby.
It won't seem so fun when a couple of these moustached twigs get swept away by the strong Jamaica bay currents (rendering is on the bay side). Besides you probably need a tetanus shot every time you get out of the water.
"Amenities include private fire pits,..."
Fire pits???
Our boy mayor will never approve. If fireplaces are verboten then fire pits will be verboten squared.
This guy is off his rocker in Rockaway.
Air conditioning?
They will be glamping with the RATS on Jamaica Bay. Hilarious.
