Elevated trains to get quieter?

The MTA says it’s installing temporary measures at near Ditmars, where trains release the air brakes at the last stop on the line. A more permanent fix (including barriers) will be built in 2015 during a redesign project.

Also, crews will check track conditions outside PS 85 in Queens near 24th Avenue. The school has worked with elected leaders, including State Senator Mike Gianaris, to request some noise mitigation along the elevated tracks in front of the school.

Work along the J line near the Myrtle stop includes the installation of special track on the weekends in April. Jamaica Center-bound trains run express from Marcy Avenue to Broadway Junction until 10 p.m. Sundays. Trains stop at Myrtle Avenue.

the elevated trains at ditmars would be a lot quieter if they didnt insist on canning the extension to LGA. then the trains wouldn't turn around there. solved.

but no, bunch of whiny residents who want to have their cake and eat it too. one god damn block to get to the coned plant and they treat an extension like it's blocking the facade of GCT.

if you don't like the noise of a train, don't move near a train.

dear pol's and MTA, thanks for spending my taxes and fares on placating a bunch of NIMBY's insistent on making transportation around the city worse.

I agree with the first anonymous. The LGA extension needs to happen. With a concrete viaduct, it would be as noiseless as the Airtrain over Van Wyck.

The noise levels at PS 85 have always been dangerously high. Vallone knew this but was ineffective in getting the problem addressed during his term.

The TA just took delivery of a new rail grinding train,it smoothest the track which will cut noise levels by a few db's. If it is found to be successful,I believe they will purchase at least 2 more........

There is a cheap operational fix for the air dump noise at Ditmars.

The noise from the air brake dump happens when the Train Operator shifts the brake handle swiftly from service brake to max emergency brake position. They can tweak the procedure to shift the brake handle first to max service brake and then to max brake position over a few seconds.
