Gigantic tower planned for downtown Jamaica

From the Queens Courier:

A new mixed-use, residential and commercial $225 million building with hundreds of units is planned for Downtown Jamaica near the AirTrain, officials said.

Greater Jamaica Development Corporation (GJDC), which owns the 93-01 Sutphin Blvd. site, recently announced the project and that BRP Companies, a New York-based developer, will build the tower.

On completion, the tower will have 400 residential units and at least 80,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, according to the GJDC.

I am very glad to see something of this magnitude, it could be the tipping stone that sparks more development in the area and cleans it up. If these apartment can bring in better quality people, that is a good thing. We do have to start somewhere to some of you naysayers.

My issue is that I notice that Congressman Gregory Meeks is attached to this, but not sure in what capacity.

Bottom line something needs to start happening to turn Jamaica around. It will probably be 5-10 years for that to happen, but I think it just might. Of course I will probably be gone by then to enjoy it.

Not sure what the planners are thinking when most travellers using the AirTrain do not descend to the street but are just making a connection from the LIRR. Also, nearly 50% of travelers originating at Jamaica are those who work at the airport. The majority of AirTrain riders are those using it to hop between terminals.
As far as retail goes, why, after 3 years of construction under the Sutphin Blvd overpass , is there not one retailer (except for the Resorts Casino waiting room)? This was supposed to be a big attraction but apparently has failed after tens of millions of dollars was sunk into that project.
What makes the Jamaica Economic Dev Corp think that by throwing up a high rise, things will change ?
I think it's another boondoggle for Jamaica and I question the the reason why certain participants are so interested in signing onto the waste of money.

It's amazing how the courts allow Greater Jamaica Development Corporation to operate parking facilities but still be a tax-exempt organization.

That one also involved Meeks and putting a waiting room in one of those spaces went against the terms of that project. So since Meeks is somehow attached to this new project raises some questions.

Sometimes I think that the powers to be can just stick up some development without cleaning up the area and think that magic just happens. Clean the damn area up first to at least attract people to the area.

I love Sutphin Blvd during the scorching heat of summer.
The filth, the stench, and the disorder just sweeps me away....
Even the planters across from the LIRR have becoming trash recepticals, and nearly all of the foliage planter in them has died. A simple thing to maintain, and they can't even do that!

I can imagine people visiting this area to check out the apartments in this tower wondering about their neighbors in this neighborhood.
