From Brownstoner Queens:New York YIMBY spots permits by Vornado Development to build a 24-story and 314-unit residential tower above the Rego Park Shopping Mall. Vornado announced plans to build the 290,000-square-foot residential addition to the mall, which it also owns, this summer. As YIMBY says, “The permits are fresh, so work is just about to begin; no completion date has been announced.” The project is expected to cost between $100 and $120 million.

everything is on the block and they don't have to walk anywhere to buy what they need. they never have to leave the block where they live
Crappy restaurants, crappy stores, crappy parks, crappy subway station, crappy neighborhood right next to and expressway and across from crime plagued Lefrak city.
Who would want to live above a crappy mall...
The owner must have seen Sky View Parc in Flushing and thought, "Why didn't I think of that?"
At least they are being built where there are stores, schools, houses of worship, etc.
New apartments in industrial zones in LIC have none of these.

I'm fine with it. Let trash people live in trash areas. Keeps the nice neighborhoods clean and populated with better people!
In Flushing they already have a mall with housing built into the structure, so if it doesn't disrupt the feel of the neighborhood/economy then more power to them
Hey, when the stores close for the night, since there is no Hell Gate subway to the Bronx, the hired help can sleep at their workplace. Now that's congestion pricing for you!
