Avella stated, “As I have been saying for awhile now, the Department of Buildings (DOB) needs to do a much better job of reviewing and auditing the applications it receives. Otherwise, as is apparently the case here, applicants can submit fraudulent documents that allows them to build beyond what they are allowed. According to the Hockenjos Family, their neighbor submitted a fraudulent site survey, which subsequently led them to claim a part of the Hockenjos’ property. It is clear that DOB needs to conduct better oversight in order to prevent the situation that the Hockenjos Family currently finds themselves in.”

Indeed, Tony Avella would travel to help a Brooklyn homeowner. But where is the homeowner's own elected representative?
A certain major map maker that use to do survey work for the city had surveys done for years by a high school graduate while the civil engineer of record was unable to perform his duties.
There are scores of mistakes that will take decades to resolve - mostly in Queens.
The owner portrays herself as an architect - she is unlicensed. The engineer who took over the job is running a management/contracting company? AND DoB DID A FULL "PLAN EXAMINATION" on this job - it wasn't self-certified. The Examiner, Yohay Albo, who doesn't come up as a licensed engineer or architect. This is nothing new at DoB - and, IMO, this is something Avella could and should bring to light.
I'd like to see Mayor De Blasio's much hyped Transition Team appoint Tony Avella as Commissioner of Buildings.
Why is Tony in Brooklyn? Does Flushing not have enough violations?

The alteration application had 'notice to revoke' since 9/30/11. Now it's been over two years, no any further action has been taken by DOB.
Notice is just a notice. Don't be scared by DOB.
The NYC D.O.B.always as honest
as the Italian Government equivalent.
In Italy after about 20 years one in
court one can hope to get an official
apology and statement of regret.
Then winning a case such as this and one may hope to get rent from the neighbor who built that part of the illegal home on one's own property.
One can also sue the town.city or village surveyor .add another 12 years time to the legal filings and court dates.
That is what allegedly Tommy Huang does. He gets his NYS licensed surveyors to certify false surveys. It is obvious that they are false -- the survey looks nothing like the property -- visually.
The DOB when apprised of it -- DOES NOTHING. The surveyors should lose their license.
