Before 2012, Corona Plaza, located on Roosevelt Avenue between National and 104th Street, was a busy area filled with trucks, traffic and no open space. After the Queens Economic Development Corporation (EDC) partnered with the Queens Museum, Councilmember Julissa Ferreras and other local groups, the plaza became an open public space allowing residents and visitors to sit down and relax.
Although the public space was expected to be temporary, in March the Department of Transportation (DOT) met with the community to introduce first plans and designs for keeping and improving Corona Plaza as a public space.
During this meeting the public gave its input as to what they wanted to add to the plaza and picked the best initial design from three options.
Some of the ideas that were included in the renderings were plaza seating, bicycle racks and corrals, a stage for cultural performances, green area, benches, additional trash cans, signage, improved lighting for security, utilizing the space under the No. 7 train for storage, an information/storage kiosk and a drinking fountain.
Well, if it's going to actually look like a park as depicted in this rendering, I'm all for it. But why do other neighborhoods get nothing more than concrete blocks and folding chairs?

Those chairs would have to be bolted to the ground.
These green parks ideas look terrible - unless you have a corporate sponsor to actually spend money and hire people to maintain it.
Look at that disaster on Queens Plaza. The plantings are supposed to recreate an urban marsh but the reality is that it is and overgrown unkept eyesore with trash hidden in the weeds and rats lurking in the drains and fussy architecture that the Parks Dept has no budget to maintain.
These people live on some planet - or more on target - they are using these green spaces to attract development.....
I passed by Queens Plaza last week......what a damn shame...$millions wasted !!! There obviouly is no maintenance plan in effect there.

She is a distant player in this - the paperwork was complete before they sent it to her for a photo op.
This is directly the result of city planning, the community board and local elected officials.
Wait till that crowd gets into the chair at Queens Borough Hall.

seems like a good idea . there needs to be more input from a real community group to make it happen. locale businesses should pay for the maintenance of the plaza, like a BID.
I wonder what they will do about the pigeon problem. It was/is still called Pigeon Plaza at one time.

Not sure who exactly whou comment was directed to, but is sounds like you are quite comfortable with your head in the sand.
