Trees down all over Highland Park!

From Save Ridgewood Reservoir's Facebook page:

These are photos of Highland Park which surrounds the reservoir. Fallen trees everywhere, weed clogged paths, broken lamps and trash everywhere. Why spend millions to destroy a habitat reclaimed by nature and used by birds on a natural migratory path when the parks department can't even maintain the park that exists? Spend that money on fixing up the existing Park!

This is what happens when you act like jerks in front of the pols and send them back to office without thought.

I mean so they give your civic money for stamps and coffee.

Is it worth it?

Queens Parks has created these "zones" across parklands where care, maintenance and the safety of the public don't madder none.
They say there are no funds. But the misguided MillionTrees program is operating under some $300 + million tax payer dollars for trees where few survive. Call for a moratorium on the tree planting and put those funds where they are needed.

This is what happens when you give jobs these jobs to people on welfare. the Parks dept is full of people who get government benefits. they don't want to work.

Has nothing to do with welfare to work people. This requires trained arborists and tree surgeons.

I called about a similar issue in Powell's Cove Park where trees fell next to the trails. The parks dept came and then said in the service request that since the trees are not blocking a path or in an active area in the park that they would not be removed, and they sit to this day. But let this be Central park, and there would be such outrage.

That's just disgusting !!
A park in Queens cant even get get 2 guys with a week whacker & backpack blower to spend a day on walkways ??
Those weeds are totally destroying that brickwork the should be hit with spectra-salts

All them trees would be saved if they were maintained. In Maspeth, Ridgewood, MV many of the London plane trees need to be topped and trimmed. They always lean 'south" and have to much "sail"
Another hurricane or strong wind from the north will take them out.
Sandys strong winds were from the south that why so many didn't fall.
Drive around Seneca & Norman in Ridgewood --we trimmed our own trees over 3 years ago F_ck the city !! They would be all gone right now hadn't we done so. The trick is to do it quick weekends when all the city officials are in Bermuda, Atlantic City or having BBQs in Glen Cove

The city is really pressing its luck with this massive negligence and gross endangerment of millions of people.
This would never happen in Manhattan, the mayor belongs in jail !! A new State statute is needed to allow class action lawsuits against the city for this abuse, loss of representation and illegal funneling of almost all Queens taxpayer dollars & services into Manhattan for special interests.
What a bunch scumbags !!!

#6...you said it. after Sandy ,so many 75-120 trees crushed houses/cars in the Bayside.Auburndale area that homeowners cut their curb danger trees down.
people died . that is the message . taxpaying home owners will do this to save their lives and investment. the pols and D.O.Parks should adhere to their wishes .
all love trees ,but death and destruction has to be stopped. new trees can be safer ,for a while.

two 110'hgt. /4' diameter trees have been dropping their 25-35' branches on cars for years on 203 street /42 avenue, Bayside ,yet the D.O.Parks does nothing. a death may move them. the 50 -70 mph winds have knocked down chimineys, caps and damaged roofs recently.

#15 MANY TAXPAYING HOME OWNERS PRUNED AND FELLED THEIR CURB DANGEROUS TREES IN THE BAYSIDE/AUBURNDALE SECTION, TO SAVE THEIR FAMILIES LIVES AND INVESTMENT.
TWO 110'HIGH/4.5.'DIMETER TREES ON 203 STREET/42AVENUE HAVE BEEN DROPPING 25-35 'LIMBS ON CARS AND HOUSES FOR YEARS BUT THE D.O.PARKS DOES NOTHING. MAYBE A DEATH WILL GET THEM TO CUT THEM DOWN.

You dont need to cut trees completely down to be safe.
Simple trimming and checking for disease BEFORE high wind or ice is the key.
Maples and London's can be a big problem since dead branches fall like rocks.
Dead Oak tree branches can "hing" and hang for over 2 seasons before they come down.

A tree shading 1/2 a house can save 1/2 million BTUs a day of AC cooling costs during summer.
Its enormous savings !!!
Cut down a tree like these Asian jackasses moving into Little Neck and you will think your average 2 ton central AC unit broke.
You will then need a 4 ton unit = 240 volts AC at 30 amps an hour. Do the operating cost per month in kilowatt hours. Hint: Its more then 8 plasma TVs per time equal
-Trees are good.

Where in the hell are your politicians? Always getting emails on stupid trivial things that are self serving but real stuff, like this, is just below the radar.

Get after them. How can you expect the mayor to know about this if your own councilman ignores it. They do the budget. Why don't they provide for their community?

All these councilmen weenies and their publicists are afraid to insult, upset or make the mayor look bad.
Its the same shit with your TV and print publication people (they are all afraid).
Its a HUGE part of the problem.

Anon No. 7&8:

Just because the trees are old does not mean that they need to be cut down. There are many trees in the world that are much older than the ones that you are talking about, and will be around for a very long time. How do you know that the trees that you are talking about are not healthy?

Once they are gone, they will not be replaced for generations. The shade they provide will be gone for may years. The drainage that their root systems provide will be gone, and you will be complaining about how your basement floods when it drizzles.

An what do your neighbors think about those trees? Do they share your opinion?
