Homeless shelter sends Dizzy Lizzy into a tizzy

From the Daily News:

Glendale leaders are livid over a proposal to convert a vacant factory into a homeless shelter.

Samaritan Village submitted a proposal with the city Department of Homeless Services to create “transitional housing” for 125 families at 78-16 Cooper Ave., officials confirmed.

“We received a proposal to serve families with children in Queens, and as with all proposals that we receive, we will carefully review and consider this one,” said agency spokeswoman Heather Janik.

Local leaders said they are gearing up for a protracted fight against the deal between property owner Michael Wilner and Samaritan Village.

Rumors swirled about a shelter sprouting up at the site last year, sparking community outrage. Their fears last year became reality this week.

“With every fabric of my being, I’m going to fight this,” said City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Middle Village).

Just as she was going to fight for a park at the St. Saviour's site and against a high school that wouldn't assure admission to local students.

I guess Glendale better get ready for a homeless shelter.

I remember reading about this last year.

As a location for housing - especially temporary housing for people in need - this location makes no sense.

The public transportation options in that part of Glendale are spotty at best. There is no subway within easy walking distance. Ditto for a supermarket.

There are bus lines, yes. The Q54 goes from Jamaica to Williamsburg. The Q29 goes to the Queens Center Mall. The Q47 goes to Jackson Heights. But for homeless families with kids in tow (who are supposedly the people this shelter will be geared to help) it seems to me that the location you need is one where there are lots of stores and services within easy walking distance.

You expect struggling parents to pile their kids onto a bus for just about everything? Do you expect these homeless families to own cars? Well, I guess they could always shop at Atlas Park. That's pretty close. C'mon. Wake up, Samaritan Village!

On top of all of this, I'm not sure but I thought this former factory site was also a brownfield location requiring clean up (which may be one of the reasons it has been vacant all these years).

Dumb dumb dumb.

That's a good picture of her. I LIKE her. She takes the sexy librarian image to another level.
Can you run for office in my neighborhood?

the politicians really do not care about the communities because they know that - outside of the feds coming in - they can pretty much do whatever is good for... them.

the people in the facility will not vote, will not complain, but need lots of services where your taxes can go instead of helping your community or block. if you get discouraged about the way your community is going, that actually helps someone like her because your only option is to move further adding to the myth 'you cannot fight city hall.'

this is very much a win for everyone in office in queens. cousin virginia joe's family doesn't live here so he doesn't give 2 shits what cuz duz.

I'd like to bring her to the oversized collection...

The Atlas Mall people must love this. They are trying to attract middle/upper middle class shoppers and now they might get the homeless as neighbors.

how could you cruel bastards expect the homeless families, which will all be black single mothers with the daddy in prison and illegal immigrants who are working the system to put up with the lousy white culture there? you scum. there isn't one Kentucky Fried Chicken or check cashing place anywhere near this old factory.
no doubt the next day after they move in everything will be ugly and broken with dog shit and graffiti all over. you can't expect them to leave their three pit bulls and rottweilers behind, do you?

Transitional housing in NYC should be a one way bus ticket to South Carolina or Detroit....

"...every fabric of my being..." I think she meant "fiber".

Elizabeth Crowley is a total moron. Glendale elected her now they'll pay for that dumb move.

Yeah right, we have confidence in Dizzie Lizzie Crowley. She doesn't have the ability to stop this. Not in a million years. Has this bird brain accomplished anything for us while in office? She couldn't even get us an all-way stop so my kids would be safe going to and from school.

Vote her out.

If you look closely, you could almost see the puppet strings on her.
