The other day at the sh*t hole slum apartment building located at 89-15 170th St and owned by slum lord Baldev Singh, this was the scene of a “ghetto barbecue.”
A good ole Jamaica ghetto cook-out.
But in no time this adaptable run down shit hole space can become a “ghetto basketball court”.
Ghetto garbage hoop complete with backboard.
No, this is not some slum in some third world country, this is the good old USA, Jamaica, Queens.
What is next “ghetto hot tub”? You pick the possibilities, they are endless.
These garbage cans are used for everything except garbage.
FYI: The New York Fire Bureau was notified of all of the fire code violations from that barbecue and all of the sh*t on the top fire escape, so let’s see if anything happens. I know the sh*t on the fire escape is still there.

Joe, what are you waiting for?
Cowardly, bad advice "George".
Throwing things down on people makes -you- the criminal. It also leaves your building staff to face an angry and dangerous situation.
Some young white drunks from bars over on Third ave (Manhattan) raised some noise in a public area outside a highrise.
Someone from the building dropped eggs on them.
The went around the corner, kicked open the front door, roughed up the doorman and trashed the lobby.
Out in Jamaica you add guns and knives to that mix.
Anyone playing cards or dominoes?
I thought I saw someone getting a haircut in the top photo...hard to tell.
Get in touch with Mr. 'Public Safety' Vallone. I am sure that some legislation he inspired would mitigate this problem.
By they way, is there anything on the web that actually states what his committee does?

Maybe Helen Mashall will stop by to shoot a few hoops.
We already know she's good at dribbling.
Landmark this site.
It's the birthplace of the Jamaica Globe Trotters.
"These garbage cans are used for everything except garbage."
- Immortal words.
By they way, is there anything on the web that actually states what his committee does?

All of these comments and posts are pure racism. Instead of adding to the problem why don't you try to solve it? People that come from other countries do not have many options and are trying to survive. Does that make it okay for you to right blatantly racist things on this site? Does it make it okay for you to take photos of them while they are in there homes having a barbeque? If the trash is the issue, you should be going after the landlords who allow for it to happen. The Landlords are the ones who allow it. Unfortunately some people don't know any other way of life.
Could you tell what they were cooking!
How do you know from looking at the photo that the people come from another country?
Ok, then call Curtis Sliwa.

Racism is uncalled for, but ignorance of he law is no excuse, never has been an excuse, never will be. People will survive without having illegal BBQs. Not to mention, they could take it to the park if they really wanted to have one. They are in public and not identified, so the photos are fine. They pose a danger to their neighbors and need to be fined.

One, the post is not racist and there is nothing racist about the post or pictures (ghetto is not racist term). Two, this is not their home it is a common space of an apartment building and what they are doing is against the fire code (and yes the landlord is to blame) and I can take photos of whatever I want as long as I am not taking photos inside their apartment. Three, the trash is not the issue, the issue is the fire code violations that puts everyone in that building and surrounding area in jeopardy. Four, as Crapper said, who can tell if they are from another country or not, you are suggesting that, but that does not matter. Five, I am attempting to solve it, since I reported it to the fire department, community board and elected leaders, hence the photo. And six, stop using that tired old phrase of "they do not know any other way of life", hell that sounds racist, plus it is bullshit. People, no matter where you are from know right from wrong.
Those kids look fairly young. Their parents probably don't want them going to the park to play by themselves. Can you blame them?
I know you're trying to make a point, and I agree with most of the stuff that you post. . . but are you really going to complain about some kids making a game out of nothing? Were you this up in arms when kids used to play stoop ball? "That stoop is for walking up and down ONLY!". It's one thing to call out fire hazards and trash everywhere. . . it's another thing to come off like a crotchety old man and complain about kids playing ball. Ridiculous.
There's a really big difference between bouncing a ball off a stoop and dunking a basketball into a contaminated garbage can. If you don't understand that, than I really can't help you.
A contaminated garbage can.
I guess that would be an issue if they were going to lick the ball afterwards.
Is it any worse than dribbling the ball on the sidewalk or street? Better than bouncing a ball off a stoop that someone just walked up after riding the subway and walking home on the sidewalk where dogs regularly piss and shit? Probably not. Besides, they have a plastic bag lining the "contaminated garbage can".
Stop making damn excuses for people's behavior. As Crapper pointed out there is the health issue playing "garbage ball". This is also an apartment building, it is not a private house. Most apartment buildings do not allow loitering, ball playing, loud music, etc in front of the building and for good reason, it disturbs the others who live in that building. If you are going to feel sorry for people who do not know better, etc, what about the people who are forced to live in those type of buildings and then have to listen to a family having a barbecue all night long, kids playing garbage ball or people hanging in front of a building talking loudly. What about their quiet enjoyment of the premises. It is called consideration, especially when living in an apartment building. Most of the apartment buildings in Jamaica do not allow people to be in front of a building for anything and they have signs posted in front. This particular building is owned by a slum lord and obviously it is anything goes, which makes it a problematic apartment building on many different levels.
How do you know what's in the plastic garbage bag? Most likely garbage. And no, it's not just an issue if they lick the ball. If you get junk on your hands and then touch common areas in an apartment building, you can infect the whole place. Duh.
Anyone else notice that there is a sign indicating that illegally parked cars will be towed? Any car parked on the front lawn is in violation of the zoning code. So that means the one in the photo should be towed.
If you get junk on your hands and then touch common areas in an apartment building, you can infect the whole place. Duh.
Do you really think common areas anywhere are clean and sanitary? That's why you wash your hands when you get home, before you eat, etc.
Know what's likely dirtier than the ball coming out of that garbage can? The money you get as change from the store, the hand rails on the subway or bus, those groceries you put on the conveyor belt in the supermarket (people put raw meat packages on those you know), the food worker who didn't wash his or her hands (it happens more than you think), and your own shoes when you take them off. And if you think a basketball court is sanitized, I've got news for you.
So, because there are other sources of contamination in the world, we should not give a second thought to children playing with a trashcan. The logic is astounding.
The ball will not be sanitized and will end up in someone's house. All one has to do is rub their eye or touch their mouth and it's a trip to the ER.
How about civilized people don't allow their kids to play with trash?
Hey Crappy, I like reading your blog and usually agree with your comments but you are way off on this one buddy!
people been having barbecues like this for as long as I can remember eeven some bars have them in their back small porch. as for the basketball playing come on man at least they are playing not mugging people!
Yes, people have been having BBQs like this forever and they have been illegal forever. Also, these kids look like they are about 10 years old so I don't think there's much threat of them mugging people if they can't play trashcan basketball.
A bar having a barbecue more than likely has a permit for that. This is not a bar, this is an apartment complex and they are in direct violations of the fire codes putting others in the building at risk. As far as the kids playing garbage ball, there are basketball courts a few blocks away at Rufus King Park, a very safe park, they would have no problems playing there and want would even make you think they would mug someone.
They have more of a chance getting a staph infection playing garbage ball than being beaten or anything else in Rufus King Park. Some of your comments are unbelievable and that is the type of thinking that helps make Queens Crap.
There is a word called civility.
There's also a regulation that garbage cans have to be covered. So much wrong here. But there will always be apologists for slobs.
The entire department of sanitation was created to prevent disease. I don't understand why people think kids playing in garbage is ok.
Maybe it's ok if they play with the dog shit that Joe photographed as well, so long as they wash their hands afterwards. (Like this crowd washes their hands...)
