Farewell to another old house
Hmm. An old house on a nice big lot? You know what's coming...
Yep, 72-22 57th Avenue was torn down.
Coming soon? Crap. The new owner applied for permits to build four 2-family houses. If the zoning hadn't been changed to R4-1, they would probably be 3-family houses. Thank goodness for small favors.
The plan examiner disapproved the plans, but it's only a matter of time before we see some Fedders magic here.

Thanks to the kids of the late and great Larry Forgione for selling it for development. Proves how much they really love Maspeth.
This must be an old photo---Mr. Forgione had a wonderful garden. The house itself was no masterpiece, and not necessarily worth saving, but I was still sorry to see it go, being a familiar fixture from my childhood, and knowing what would most certainly rear it's ugly head in its place. And the garden, that's a deep loss. Neighbors came and salvaged as many plants as possible, but the trees, the haven for birds---all lost. Really, really sad. BUT---and it almost balances the "crime"---there's a fine old house at 54th Ave. and 66th St., also in Maspeth, which WAS bought by a developer, and when the family learned what was planned for the property, they rescinded the sale. So, it was bought by a man who spent the better part of 3 yrs. renovating and making it as lovely as the day it was built! It, too, is a large property, and we all feared what could've been!
I'm getting so sick of multi family houses being put up! All they do is sell it to a church who puts about 100 illegals in the house!!
