Police academy construction chugging along

From the Queens Courier:

The first phase of a master $656 million plan to construct a new police academy in College Point is well on track for substantial completion by next December, the NYPD said.

City recruits will not likely step foot into their new training digs until July 2014, but the two steel structures in the Phase 1 portion of the project — meant to house classrooms, administrative offices and gyms — have been erected and are close to being 100 percent constructed, according to Inspector Terrence Riley of the NYPD.

The 700,000-square-feet currently being developed in the project’s first phase, Riley said, will accommodate one tour of 1,640 recruits during their first six months of training. Among classrooms and gyms, the new space for the city’s finest-to-be will also include a quarter-mile outdoor running track and a mock-up small city with banks, stores, apartments and streetscapes for simulated scenario-based training.

Some 3,280 recruits a year will come in and out of the total 30 acre site — bordered by College Point Boulevard, 28th Avenue and Ulmer Street — once it is completed, but the full build has not been entirely designed or funded yet and will not be for a few years, Riley said.

But some College Point residents called that “substantial” multimillion dollar investment into question, saying the new academy will not directly decrease crime in the commercial area.

A building full of unarmed police recruits and non-patrol administrative staff will do absolutely nothing to prevent crime in the area. It's not like they will be out patrolling the neighborhood, they will be inside attending classes.

I'm applying for a Dunkin Donuts
franchise to be built adjacent to the academy.

I can't wait for another movie sequel of Police Academy.

"Car 54, where are you"? Tooty and Muldoon are busy collecting payoffs for the chief, from Flushing's Asian madams.

Please post solution driven ideas such as a bus that will run every 30 minutes to take cadets to College Point Blvd during lunch hour, this increases police "prescense" as well as supporting local busiesses. Does anyone know how to make this happen? Any other solutions?

Nope. What does eating a donut have to do with being a cop? Most cops I know drink coffee, but don't necessarliy eat donuts. I see more construction workers, con ed guys and teachers in Dunkin DOnuts than I see cops.

Really? The city is building a huge complex that will be a traffic nightmare and you're fixated on donuts? GROW UP!!!

Seriously, stop with the donut nonsense. I too, know alot of cops, and NONE of them eat donts. Please stick with the issue at hand.

You're spitting your words all over the place.
it's "eat donuts" not "eat donts".

You've also omitted a space between "alot".
It should read "a lot".

If you slow down, you'll spell and write more properly.
It sounds like you've got some issues yourself.

Not to mention, its a horrendous looking building. The cladding (which looks like they are faking shadows on the facade) is a joke.

Dude, a few people have told you to stop already. We are trying to have a discussion about the new Police Academy, not about minor typos, "donuts", "donts" or english grammar. You and the person(s) here that you have a problem with should take it elsewhere. Please, enough already.

would you rather see another section 8 housing project built? filled with nothing but savages, hookers, drug addicts, drug dealers , like you have "walking" the streets of farrington, 32nd ave. The same folks (or should i say creatures) who hang out in the pathmark shopping center, begging for a buck, so they can score their next hit? Or maybe watch some toothless hooker preform an oral act of pleasure on some horny john? All housed up in that "beautiful" project. I think i'll stick with the police academy.

They can't build housing at the College Point Corporate Park, so what the hell are you smoking?
