Sister Claudia Bradshaw and her two pals, caught off guard by a flash flood, were trapped in a sinking car beneath a Queens overpass Wednesday afternoon.
Bradshaw, 86, prayed for deliverance, while her friends frantically called 911. The water was up to Bradshaw’s neck when her prayers were answered — by a pair of plucky Fire Department EMT’s.
Fighting through the pelting rain into a deep puddle that quickly became 7 feet of angry, swirling water, Marilyn Arroyo and Jimmy Guailacela pulled the nun and her friends out — just before the swamped Lexus went under.
Arroyo said they’re glad they didn’t wait for firefighters to arrive, which is what they would usually do.
This is one very deep underpass - a troubled one for many reasons and now apparently an almost deadly one for the Nun and her 2 friend if not for the EMT heros. My question is this why is the city not addressing this flooding issue at this and all sites where this occurs during a severe downpour? This is a reoccurring issue that needs to be corrected or the underpass closed to prevent injury or death.
Rain is not an accident. Even heavy rain is not an accident. Even if the nuns didn't know of the danger, the city knows. The city got lucky on this one.
The one today (9/8/12) scared the daylights out of me (have some pics). I saw the one car with the wipers still going and I was afraid I might have to jump in and break some windows, but it appears they got out already. What scared me afterward is that the tall fencing makes it difficult to jump over the safety barrier when precious seconds count..!

GOOD JOB!
Cooper Av floods even when it drizzles. DEP and DOT are too incompetent to figure out how to fix the problem

Glad to see that all the money in the boro is going for new development and the absolute minimum for those that are paying the politician's salaries.
And as long a you keep putting them in office that will not change.
