Call boxes made beautiful in Woodside

Hi QC,

Someone has painted a couple of the fire alarm boxes in Woodside. This one is on 32nd Avenue. I wonder who is painting them? I doubt the FDNY, but I guess I could be wrong. Anyway, they look great.

Someone is doing the same thing in Forest Hills. Some of the call boxes go back to the 1950s. Nice to see them come to life with an artistic touch.

I love these!

I wanna do this!

Anybody know what paint is the best to use?

Don't know what paint was used, but Rustolium now comes in pretty much every color.

Ah, Rustoleum. Excellent idea.

Rust oleum -- Fire Engine Red or Sunrise Red

But whatever paint you use, please mask off the bottom of the box and use drop cloths. People are too lazy to do this when they paint stuff, fireboxes, fences, whatever. Look at the messy red paint droppings on the surrounding sidewalk in these photos.

Neatness counts.

I've seen these and they look great! Whoever is doing this deserves a medal! Good to see that someone is doing something nice, just because !

My only concern is if this catches on and more people take the initiative , will the city try to fine them for vandalism? I can see it happening.

Maybe Elizabeth Crowley is involved. Just beautiful

Alfredo, you make an excellent point. The unions will not be happy with their jobs being done for them.

I just hope that an overzealous NYPD officer doesn't collar the artist for graffiti- which is now a felony!

I saw someone on 32nd avenue painting one and he was wearing an FDNY shirt so maybe it is them

It does look great, but I thought the city was removing all the call boxes.
