Bayside Waldbaum's to close
From Bayside Patch:
The Waldbaum's on Francis Lewis Boulevard near Garden World is set to close, Community Board 11 Chair Jerry Iannece announced at Monday night's meeting.
“We worked hard to get Fairway in, and hard to get Stop and Shop in, but [closures are] just a fact of life now,” Iannece said, adding that 77 of the store's employees would be put out of work by the closure.
Unfortunately, the employees aren't the only ones who will be affected, according to Iannece.
“When you close the local super market, it sort of disrupts life because people are used to shopping there,” he said.

How come Waldbaum's never had a sale on Häagen-Daz, Ben & Jerry's, or Starbucks ice cream like Stop-n-Shop and Pathmark do?
I worked there during high school, many years ago.
It's the closest supermarket to me, but I rarely went in there. The parking lot is too small, and too hard to get in and out of. I can drive a little bit farther to the Bay Terrace one and get a much larger selection. Once I'm in my car and driving, what's an extra five minutes each way if I get a larger selection?
We all new once Fairway swooped in that some of the longtime makets would end up closing.
At least its not another Han-a-reum or one of those kosher markets.
Isn't Garden World, behind them, going to be sold and up for development?
Something BIG is coming.
The loss of a market will be the least of the area's problems.
Isn't that whole swath of land zoned commercial?
And what can that chooch
(Italian slang for donkey)
Iannece do besides failing to gain every political office he's tried for?
Whatcha runnin' for these days Jerry?
Waldbaums and Pathmark are the same company
H-MART Korean Supermarket is coming I have heard.
They need to close down the Waldbaums on 35th av and franny lew next. What a disgrace that place is. All of these trash food, nasty meat, poor quality fruit and vegetable joints need to close!!
They need to close five stores in Queens (Waldbaum, A&P, or PathMark).
Oh MAN... that's my favorite supermarket! All the workers there are so nice.
What's it's gonna be now, ANOTHER unneeded chain drug store or crappy Asian supermarket? One-by-one all the supermarkets by me are gone. If my car breaks down, I'm screwed.
AND how many people in the Mitchell-Linden community are aware of the main supermarket, Key Food, is also closing? That's the store right behind Moby Stavisky's office of Willets Point Blvd.
Waldbaums and it's employees have always been the dregs. Ever stand in a mile long line with only one or two check outs open. When you dont care what happens to your customers this is what happens. Looking forward to H-Mart!
"Looking forward to H-Mart!"
Be careful what you wish for...
"If my car breaks down, I'm screwed."
If your car breaks down, you can get it fixed. You're not screwed.
If you can no longer afford a car, you can take the bus. Not as convenient, quick, or comfortable, but still an option.
BTW, Fairway will deliver a $100 or more purchase for free within 5 mile radius I think.
The Key Food closure is unconfirmed internet speculation, but for years I have thought it is just a matter of time for that store. I still shopped there, but haven't been there since the opening of
fairway, which is significantly farther away. What does that tell you?
Can you guess who is behind the " sudden" closure of this market and impeding development of the land it's surrounded by?
They could build a higher rise office or commercial building on the site.
All the Franny Lew Waldbaums are old and decrepit, including the staff. I once got Halls Mentholyptus when I had a cold and they were slopped by the mops. Waldbaums has a far better name than these pigs.
H-Mart has an excellent selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. Will just need to educate the manager of the new store (if indeed an H-Mart moves there) as to which Western products to carry for the neighborhood. The one on Northern Blvd in the Murray Hill shopping plaza is very popular.
They need to close the Waldbaum's in Jackson Heights on 77th Street and 31st Avenue. Bad meat, expired dairy, rotten fruit, dirty floors and dusty shelves and nasty and incompetent management and staff. Wish H Mart was opening here!
