Building collapse kills man

From WPIX:

A massive collapse of a Brooklyn home under construction left one person dead Tuesday.

According to authorities, the collapse happened at a home on Frank Court in the Gerritsen Beach section.

One of the victims, described as a 25-year-old male, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

At the time of the collapse, a total of five workers were working inside the vacant home. Despite minor injuries, the 4 workers all refused medical attention.

The one fatality has yet to be identified.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the collapse.

Emergency crews are on the scene, assessing the damage.

From CBS 2:

Authorities told CBS 2′s John Slattery it appears the addition was not properly anchored or supported.

“The existing structure was an old bungalow. It appears the existing structure could not support the second story addition based on what we see so far, said LiMandri.

The work was being done by JD Construction of Brooklyn, and though the Buildings Department said permits were in order, there may have been illegal work done prior to 2004. Since then, the property has changed ownership.

Look at that thing...A cardboard doll house.

Why the hell can't American homes be made out of quality, modern materials.

If you use steel studs and cement/concrete floors it will cost approx 15-23% more initially, but the savings via lower insurance premiums and less maintenance will offset the difference in less than a decade....And you won't have a house that shudders and rattles when the kids wrestle upstairs.

Everyone with a license on this job should lose it. Everyone employed on this job should be fired. Not "anchored" ?? How stupid that sounds.

and that's why the four injured workers refused medical treatment. They know that if their conditions are documented, they will be hauled into court. they are all illegal aliens.

If this country actually enforced the laws Mr. Garcia would be alive today. There are two sets of laws. One for citizens that are harsher than those for illegal aliens.

Too bad that
Tommy Huang wasn't under it.

By the way, speaking of Tommy Huang, no word yet on the final outcome of the fatal collapse at his Queens Blvd. site. It happened January 11, 2011.

OSHA released their report -- they fined the offenders amounts appropriate to their offenses (?) and history. Then, they substantial reduced the fines and let them pay in monthly installments. So much for deterents.

Why has the DOB and DOI not yet released their investigative reports? Isn't the D.A. waiting for them?

Rumour has it that the people doing the work are all firemen. There will be no consequences for the contractor! And it sure won't be the Department of Buildings' fault. . . probably no problem with the structural stability progress inspections (yeah, right). I predict the investigation will find the designer of the building, the local mail deliverer and the dog catcher are at fault.

Take a look at what the firemen are building behind their firehouse in Bayside, just to the right of Donovan's parking lot.

Is it to code? Do they have a permit?
